Moniteau girls basketball wins 1st KSAC game vs Union/A-C Valley; Knoch’s Owen Layhew wins invite: Roundup
Moniteau won a defensive KSAC battle Saturday against Union/A-C Valley 30-24.
Sayge Brunst led the Warriors (3-5, 1-1) with nine points despite making just one field goal, a first-quarter three. She same 6 of 10 free throws. Maddy Eury had eight points, and Emily Matz had seven points and eight rebounds.
The Falcon Knights (3-4, 1-3) got a game-high 13 points from Maddy Dehart, who also added seven rebounds and three steals.
Knoch beat Kiski Area 59-46 in a game held at La Roche University on Saturday to improve to 5-2.
Vinny DeFelice had a team-high 15 points, Liam Avon added 12 and Roman DeFelice added 10.
North Hills 75, Mars 62 — Austen Wroblewski dropped 25 points and Ben Detisch had 11, but Mars (5-2) fell at La Roche.
North got 29 and 26 from Jackson Long and Nathan Schanbacher, respectively.
Greenville 69, Slippery Rock 63 — Doug Popovec had a Rockets-leading 16 points and Fred Campagna dropped 15 in this one, but they blew a 30-20 halftime lead.
Slippery Rock (2-5) made eight 3-pointers.
North Catholic 82, Newport Central Catholic 61 — Jude Rottman sank four 3-pointers and finished with a team-high 23 points to beat the Keytucky-based Newport CC at the Queen City Hoop Fest in Cincinnati.
Jason Fredericks and Brandon Pickett each had 20 for the Trojans, who broke open the game in the third quarter with 28 points.
Knoch finished fourth at Erie High School’s Major Tom Carr Invitational with 148.5 points as three Knights made the finals.
Owen Layhew (145 pounds) beat Girard’s Sebastian Buchanan 10-8 for the title, and 160-pounder Keegan Orris pinned Chartiers-Houston’s Dadrien Walls in 1:43 for his gold medal.
Layhew is now 12-1 this season after going 3-0 Saturday and sits at 91 career wins.
At 152, Brayden McGowan lost the title by third-period pin to Chartiers-Houston’s Angelo Mele.
Maximus Barrionuevo (172), Karson Welsh (189) and Tyler Pawlick (215) all finished fourth.
Butler finished ninth and Slippery Rock came in 21st in the Pine-Richland Ram Slam on Saturday.
Golden Tornado middleweight Anastasia Manchester pinned North Allegheny’s Lorelei Bungard in 42 seconds to claim third at 136 pounds and finish the tournament 3-1. Sienna Stutz (112) lost her third-place match by pin. Brin Zehmisch (124) and Monica Osborne (235) won their fifth-place bouts.
Butler finished with 89 points and Slippery Rock had 45.5.
The Rockets’ Sophie Hensel (112) was pinned in the second period of the final after winning her first three matches by technical fall, pin and decision.
