Snow squalls affect Butler, surrounding counties

A snow squall warning was issued for Butler and four other counties Friday afternoon, Dec. 19, impacting traffic and other activities in the region.

According to National Weather Service Pittsburgh, the squall warning was issued at 2:27 p.m. and is in effect until 3:15 p.m.

“At 2:27 p.m. EST, a dangerous snow squall was located along a line from over East Palestine (Ohio) to over Coraopolis (Allegheny County), or along a line from over East Palestine to near Franklin Park, moving east at 40 mph,” the warning said.

According to Seneca Valley School District’s website, all activity buses for Friday are canceled. Families are advised by the district to plan alternate transportation for their student.

During a snow squall, National Weather Service said drivers could experience rapid changes in visibility and flash freezing of roads.

In preparation of weather conditions, PennDOT also announced reduced speeds on Interstate 80 in Clinton and Jefferson counties. The speed limit is reduced to 45 mph between exit 45 and exit 97 and commercial vehicles must stick to the right lane.
