Butler man charged with tampering with traps at Moraine State Park

A Butler man was charged by the Pennsylvania Game Commission after he reportedly tampered with traps lawfully set in Moraine State Park.

Matthew Todd Maxwell, 43, was charged Thursday, Dec. 11, with one misdemeanor count each of terroristic threats and disorderly conduct, two misdemeanor harassment counts and multiple summary counts related to disturbing traps following a Nov. 1 incident.

According to an affidavit, a man had lawfully set three foothold traps and two dog-proof traps in a wooded area adjacent to the road near the parking lot at the end of Park Road.

The man told a game warden one trap had been tampered with and two traps were missing.

The warden later discovered Maxwell had been in the area earlier in the day with two unleashed dogs, according to an affidavit. Maxwell encountered the man who set the traps, became agitated and began threatening the man and his family, according to the affidavit.

According to the affidavit, Maxwell also told the man he would throw his trap through his vehicle’s window if he ever saw it again.

The warden interviewed Maxwell on Nov. 15 when he allegedly admitted to throwing one trap into the weeds and another trap into the lake.

Maxwell’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Jan. 28 before District Judge Joseph Nash.
