JEANNETTE — The numbers senior quarterback Terrelle Pryor has put up this year boggle the mind.

And when it comes to football talent at Jeannette High School, he is not alone.

"Terrelle is such a great athlete that he overshadows a lot of the other kids," said third-year Jayhawks coach Ray Reitz. "But there are plenty of good players on this team.

"We knew we had a chance to be a special team before this season started. The kids have stayed focused and have made that happen."

Jeannette (13-0) has won 25 of its last 26 games — the lone loss being a 29-28 decision to Wilson in last year's PIAAClass AAtitle game — and plays fellow unbeaten Karns City (12-0) in the first round of the state playoffs at 1 p.m. Saturday at Clarion University's Memorial Stadium.

The Jayhawks polished off their second successive WPIALchampionship with a 61-12 thrashing of Beaver Falls last Friday at Heinz Field. They have outscored the opposition 735-56 — or by an average margin of 56-8 — and need 21 points Saturday to break the high school state record for points scored in a season.

Southern Columbia set the record of 755 points last season.

Jeannette returned nine starters on both sides of the ball from its 2006 team that finished 12-2. Reitz is 33-4 in his career with the Jayhawks.

"Our big thing is speed," he said. "Teams have a hard time matching up with us."

And that all starts with Pryor.

The 6-foot-6, 220-pound quarterback has passed for 3,855 yards and rushed for 3,781 yards in his high school career. He runs the 40-yard dash in 4.4 seconds and has accounted for 105 touchdowns in his prep career.

This year, Pryor has completed 65 of 94 passes for 69 percent, 1,395 yards and 17 touchdowns. He has rushed for 1,432 yards and 28 touchdowns on 103 carries in his third year behind center.

Pryor has narrowed his list of collegiate choices to six:Florida, Ohio State, Penn State, West Virginia, Tennessee and Texas. Most national recruiting lists rank him as the top high school recruit in the nation.

"Terrelle has only played four quarters in one game (Aliquippa) and he's played as many as three quarters in just five games,"Reitz said. "People may say we run our scores up, but I can show anybody stats that say otherwise.

"When we get big leads, we run the ball."

That could explain why Pryor has thrown only 95 passes all year.

Aliquippa is the only opponent that Jeannette hasn't beaten by the mercy rule this season. The Jayhawks have been held to 40 points only once — a 40-0 victory over McGuffey in Week 5 of the regular season.

The team has punted only six times all year.

Jordan Hall is Jeannette's leading receiver with 17 catches for 519 yards and six TDs. Hall also has 79 carries for 678 yards and 15 TDs.

James Derry has 53 carries for 451 yards and eight scores while receiver Kemy Grant has 12 catches for 276 yards and four TDs.

"We spread the ball around quite a bit,"Reitz said.

Jeannette has rushed for 3,697 yards, averaging 10.3 yards per carry.

In facing Karns City, Reitz sees a well-disciplined team that's solid in fundamentals.

"What impresses me the most is that they play with a lot of passion,"Reitz said. "That's a well-drilled football team that runs the Wing-T extremely well.

"Coach (Ed)Conto has done a tremendous job with those guys. He has them playing hard and playing together."

Defensively, Jeannette has shut out five opponents and held five others to seven points or fewer.

"I like to think our team is still motivated and driven based on our narrow loss (in the state finals) last year,"Reitz said. "But kids are kids. You're never quite sure what they're thinking."
