David C. Cumberland
David C. Cumberland, 74, of Meridian went to be with his heavenly Father at 7:47 p.m. Friday in Butler Memorial Hospital after a monthlong illness.
Born April 8, 1935, in Butler, he was the son of the late Harry Cumberland and Frances Wall Cumberland.
Mr. Cumberland retired after 38 years in 1993 from Armco Steel, where he was a maintenance turn foreman at Plant 2.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church, where he served as a trustee and usher for many years. He also performed many handyman duties for the church.
Mr. Cumberland enjoyed traveling, gardening and any and all types of handyman work. There was nothing too challenging for him. His greatest enjoyment, however, came from spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren.
He was loved and will be missed terribly by all who were so fortunate to have him as a part of their lives.
He was the beloved husband of Betty Holmes Cumberland, who he married June 26, 1954; loving father and father-in-law of Jacquelyn Pietrowski and her husband, Daniel, of Munhall, Laura Nichol and her husband, Daniel, of Meridian and Jeffrey Cumberland and his wife, Susan, of Meridian; loving and proud grandfather of Aimee Nichol Reed and her husband, Justin, Amber Gilson Solomon and her husband, Daniel, David Gilson, Joshua Cumberland, Rachel Nichol, Caleb Cumberland, Matthew Cumberland and Sara Cumberland. He also is survived by his first great-grandson, Logan Eugene Reed, who was just born June 3, 2009; one sister, Phyllis Weigle of Butler; three brothers, Theodore Cumberland of Florida, Thomas Cumberland of Illinois and Lonny Cumberland of Butler; three brothers-in-law; four sisters-in-law; and several nieces and nephews. He also is survived by his mother-in-law, Ruth Holmes of Butler.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Vernon Cumberland; one sister, Lillian Dickey; and his father-in-law, Willard Holmes, who passed away May 8, 2009.
<B>CUMBERLAND</B> — Friends and family of David C. Cumberland, who died Friday, June 5, 2009, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the <B>THOMPSON-MILLER FUNERAL HOME</B>, 124 E. North St. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church, 221 W. New Castle St., Butler, with the Rev. David Maitland and the Rev. Jeff Gwilt, both of the First Baptist Church, officiating.
