Thomas Shidemantle
Thomas Dale Shidemantle, 83, of Mechanicville, N.Y., formerly of Staten Island, N.Y., died Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2026, at Saratoga Hospital in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
He was born in Butler on Aug. 18, 1943, son of Dale P. Shidemantle Sr. and Betty R. Shidemantle, both now deceased.
He attended Butler Area Senior High School.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving in Norfolk, Va., from 1960 to 1964. He went to the Great Lakes Naval Training Station for boot camp in Great Lakes, Ill., and graduated from Class A Radioman School in Norfolk, Va., in 1962, then transferred to the Atlantic Fleet during the Cuban missile crisis.
He moved to Staten Island after his discharge from the Navy, living there for many years before moving to Mechanicville to live with his daughter, Lisa, about 14 years ago.
He was employed for about 15 years at Wallich's Camera Shop on Staten Island and for about 25 years at Classic Tile in New Jersey.
He took voice lessons in childhood and sang in a ’50s doo-wop group named The Concepts. He often sang for family celebrations. During his service in the Navy, he was a member of the Bluejacket Choir during boot camp, and later he sang in the Norfolk Base Chapel Choir at the historic David Adams Memorial Chapel.
In addition to music, he enjoyed photography and had a darkroom in Historic Richmond Town on Staten Island, where he did a lot of his developing and took photographs for a museum catalog. He also enjoyed running and riding his bicycle, and was an avid reader.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Shidemantle was preceded in death on Jan. 1, 2010, by his wife, Catherine Elizabeth Vicari Shidemantle, whom he married Dec. 4, 1965.
He is survived by a daughter, Lisa (James) Shidemantle, of Mechanicville; one grandson, KC Thomas Snavely, of Mechanicville; a son, Thomas (Tammy) Shidemantle of Hillsborough, N.J.; two sisters, Mary Grey (John) Emmett, of Drexel Hill, Pa., and Beth (Steve) Himebauch, of Haverford, Pa.; three brothers, David R. (Kathleen) Shidemantle, of Zelienople, Peter W. (Karen) Shidemantle, of Syracuse, N.Y., and Dale P. (LuAnn) Shidemantle Jr., of Erie; and many nieces and nephews.
A private family graveside service will be held at Oceanview Cemetery in Staten Island, where Mr. Shidemantle will be buried next to his wife.
