3 Ohio men accused of assaulting woman released on bond

Fourth man previously posted bail

Three Ohio men accused of imprisoning a woman, cutting her hair and burning her with hot water in an Oct. 29 assault were released from Butler County Prison following a Thursday, Dec. 11, preliminary hearing.

Aiden Nasir Suren, 19, of Youngstown, who Butler Township police said led the assault, had posted bail following his Nov. 20 arraignment. Resean Jamar Graham, 19, and David Anthony Anderson, 18, both of Youngstown, and Elijah Josiah Roberts, 21, of Columbus, were released Thursday by District Judge Kevin O’Donnell after the prosecution failed to produce the allegedly assaulted woman to testify at the hearing.

The three men had been incarcerated since Oct. 29, which was why their defense attorneys objected to a continuance by assistant district attorney J.P. Kulzer.

Suren, Graham and Roberts are represented by defense attorneys Matthew Mangino, Benjamin Levine and public defender Patrick Casey, respectively. Anderson did not have an attorney present.

Arresting Butler Township officer Tyler Glenn said he was unable to serve the assaulted woman with a warrant to appear in court. Mangino said the woman had been evading being served a warrant.

The continuance allowed Kulzer to issue a stronger material witness warrant to have the woman appear at the next court date. Kulzer said he had the motion for the warrant written, but the warrant required a continuance before it could be filed.

The alleged assault occurred in an apartment on Division Street in Lyndora. Police visited the residence and detained Anderson, Graham, Roberts and a woman not charged in the incident.

The assaulted woman was at the residence when the men accused her of stealing from them. Police said the men cornered her in a bathroom when she attempted to hide there. Police said they held her down, cut her hair, burned her with hot water and physically assaulted her. The woman said the men also stole her wallet, purse and phone so she could not call for help.

The woman sustained several lacerations, burns, cuts and bruises all over her body. She was taken by Butler Ambulance Service to Allegheny General Hospital.

The woman detained in the apartment with the three men told police she was forced to sit on a couch during the incident, and her phone was taken.

Suren is charged with one felony count each of aggravated assault and conspiracy to commit aggravated assault, and one misdemeanor count each of false imprisonment, unlawful restraint, terroristic threats, simple assault and conspiracy to commit unlawful restraint and simple assault.

Roberts is charged with felony conspiracy to commit aggravated assault and one misdemeanor count each of false imprisonment, possession of controlled substances and drug paraphernalia and conspiracy to commit false imprisonment, unlawful restraint and simple assault. Police said Oxycodone was found in Roberts’ right sock.

Anderson and Graham are charged with felony conspiracy to commit aggravated assault and one misdemeanor count each of false imprisonment and conspiracy to commit unlawful restraint, false imprisonment and simple assault.

The continued preliminary hearings have not yet been scheduled.
