Defense Shines

Turnovers help Freeport win at Derry

DERRY — Nine plays in and forced to defend a fourth-and-inches, Freeport junior defensive lineman Logan Jendrejewski crunched Derry runner Andre Ward for a 2-yard loss.

Jendrejewski didn't think the play set a standard during the Yellowjackets' 34-14 Allegheny Seven Conference win Friday night at Trojan Stadium.

But the Freeport (2-1, 2-0) defense continuously created extra opportunities throughout the evening.

“No, not really,” Jendrejewski said. “I think we battled and played our best game of the season. All we can do is keep it rolling.”

Jacksen Reiser's fumble recovery set up the Yellowjackets' first score, while interceptions from Zach Clark and Mario DeVivo killed Derry drives.

Winning on the road was vital for Freeport. The WPIAL announced this week that the top two teams from every Class 3A conference, plus two wild cards will make the postseason.

The Yellowjackets are now one of two teams in their conference — along with North Catholic — to have a 2-0 conference record.

“100 percent, yeah,” Jendrejewski said about having a sense of urgency. “We need to be at the top all the time. I think with the group of kids we have we will be. We just need to play how we are.”

Many times, Freeport sophomore quarterback Ben Lane made sure the extra possessions resulted in points.

Lane rushed for a team-high 116 yards and three scores, passed for 239 yards and ran a kickoff back 95 yards for a touchdown.

“The line has been a big help,” Lane said. “When I scramble a lot, the receivers know to scramble down the field with me so I can find them.”

Most vital for Lane were the plays he made when the Trojans (1-2, 1-2) started to take control. Derry took a 14-13 edge by scoring twice in less than a minute.

Matt McDowell caught a 29-yard touchdown pass from Nick Detore with 2 minutes, 47 seconds left before halftime. After a Freeport fumble, Detore threw another touchdown pass, this time a 20-yard strike to Hunter Wack 59 seconds later.

The Yellowjackets decided to be aggressive before halftime. Vincent Clark, who finished with 134 yards receiving, capped a five-play, 64-yard drive with a 48-yard touchdown catch.

“Anything can happen, especially with Ben back there,” Freeport coach John Gaillot said. “He can make things happen with his legs and his arm. We just went with our offense.”

Lane would then return the kickoff after halftime 95 yards for a touchdown to stretch Freeport's lead to 27-14.

The Yellowjackets built a 13-0 lead. Reiser's fumble recovery set up a 17-yard touchdown run by Lane with 4 minutes, 22 seconds left in the first quarter.

Lane would score on a 9-yard run to stretch the lead to 13-0 in the second quarter before Derry battled back.

Lane and Freeport never were down.

“No,” said Lane on if he gets fatigued from all the running. “Sometimes I get tired and need a break, but I just run all over the field.”
