Borough OKs funds for security cameras

SLIPPERY ROCK — Borough Council voted last week to spend $8,441 on six new security cameras for the borough building on East Water Street.

The cameras were requested by Police Chief Terry Fredokovitz.

“The basic reason is to protect borough property and its employees,” Fredokovitz said Wednesday. “We’ve got cars parked there and multiple entrances to the building and it’s not protected properly.”

The cameras will be mounted on the exterior of the building and will monitor the doors to the building and the parking lot, he said.

The cost includes installation, service and software that will allow the police to access recordings or a live stream while in their cruisers, said Dave Miller, council president.

Council Vice President Ron Steele voted against buying the cameras.

He said the borough will need to spend significant funds in 2018 to buy new police radios, which will be required by Butler County. The county may or may not provide financial assistance to fire and police departments for the equipment, Steele said.

The money for the cameras is coming from a fund intended for the radios, which the borough will have to replenish, he said.

Miller said the board should address its most immediate need.

“I don’t want to hamper what can happen now for what may or may not happen two, three, five years down the road,” he said.
