Award honors county law enforcement agencies
WARRENDALE — Two Butler County law enforcement agencies were honored Wednesday for their work making motorists safer on the roads.
The Cranberry Township Police Department and the state police Butler Barracks were among the 40 Western Pennsylvania police departments honored with AAA’s Platinum Community Traffic Safety Award for their safety activities.
The awards luncheon at the Marriott Pittsburgh North honored those recipients and 51 additional departments that excelled in making their communities safer. Other departments will receive Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards.
During 2012, there were 1,310 traffic deaths on Pennsylvania roads and highways.
The officers honored through the AAA Community Safety Awards Program continue to strive to reduce the number of fatalities by educational programs and promotional campaigns to encourage safe driving habits.
“We are very proud of the departments for their achievement and participation in the Community Traffic Safety Program,” said J.J. Miller, AAA safety adviser in a statement. “They went above and beyond the call of duty by organizing projects, which would make their community a safer place for motorists as well as local residents.”
To be eligible for the annual awards, a community must conduct traffic safety promotions and educate the public on safety topics.
AAA East Central conducts free highway safety programs throughout Western Pennsylvania for all age groups.
It is a not-for-profit association with 82 offices in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, New York and Kentucky serving more than 2.7 million members.
