Earl Smith

Earl Franklin Smith, 94, of Butler, died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2025, at Seasons of Saxonburg.

He was born Nov. 11, 1931 in Worthington, Pa. the son of Benjamin F. and Dorothy June (Shay) Smith.

Earl was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in Germany and France during the Cold War. He was a steel worker for the majority of his life, working at Ferrios Slag, Youngstown Sheet & Tube, in Monessen and at Sharon Works, where he drove at least one hour each way to and from and told us stories about getting sleepy on the trip home. He had to pull off to sleep until the car would get cold and wake him up to drive home. As a family, we never were lacking, evening through layoffs, as Dad and Mom knew how to make do.

He was a member of North Main Church of God in Butler for many years and also visited Grace Way Church every other Sunday. He was a Mason, belonging to Kittanning-East Brady F&AM Lodge No. 244.

Earl cherished his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He looked forward to going camping with “the boys” and later on, to go hunting with them. He also enjoyed camping with his granddaughters and hunting with Sherry, who got her first buck. Earl was also an avid bird lover, knowing the names of all of them. He loved to mow his grass and work outside doing anything, too.

Left behind to forever cherish his memory are his daughters, Sherry (Tim) Burka, of Lyndora and Shawnee (Mick) Fitz, of Petrolia; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brother, Wayne Smith, of Worthington; and sister, Ester Neupert, of Worthington.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin and Dorothy Smith; his wife, Shirley (Crissman) Smith; infant daughter, Shirley; brother, Carl Smith; and sisters, Ruth Gaggini and infant Linda.
