Former security guard at schools wants to block potential evidence

A former security guard facing charges for allegedly sharing nude photos of a female Seneca Valley High School student and inappropriately touching another female student wants to block testimony from other potential victims.

At a brief hearing Wednesday, Nov. 26, in Butler County Common Pleas Court, the attorney representing Matthew A. Cowan, 27, of Brackenridge, Allegheny County, argued the potential testimony should not be allowed.

The hearing was held after Cowan’s attorney, Al Lindsay, filed a motion Oct. 31 in both cases to preclude testimony regarding additional potential victims.

Other potential victims are referenced in police reports and discovery materials, but Cowan has not been charged with offenses relating to them, according to the motion, and referencing those potential victims would be highly prejudicial, and could sway a jury.

Lindsay argued Wednesday before Judge Joseph Kubit a state rule of evidence prohibits use of that testimony.

Assistant District Attorney Laura Pitchford said the motion is premature and she isn’t currently planning to use the testimony. She said she is working with Lindsay to resolve the case.

Cowan’s trial had been scheduled for December, but Pitchford said she planned to request rescheduling the trial for January.

Cowan worked for Securitas Security Services USA providing security for the Seneca Valley School District, police said.

A female student, who was between 16 and 17 years old in 2021, told Cranberry Township police she sent nude and sexually explicit photos to Cowan for about eight months before the beginning of the 2021 school year, according to an affidavit.

Two people reported receiving nude digital images of the girl from an unknown source through Snapchat and Instagram, according to the affidavit. Police amended the charges after determining other people received the messages.

Instagram records show an account used by Cowan sent 14 nude or sexually explicit images and videos of the girl to at least seven people on at least 20 occasions between Aug. 21 and Aug. 23, 2022, according to the affidavit.

In that case, he is facing felony charges, including 22 counts of criminal use of a communication facility, 14 counts of attempted dissemination of child pornography and eight counts of disseminating child pornography.

Cowan also is facing charges filed by Jackson Township police for allegedly inappropriately touching a 17-year-old female student on a trail behind the school campus in August 2021. Cowan worked as a security guard at the middle school at that time.

In that case, Cowan has been charged with felony counts of sexual contact with a school student, criminal use of a communication facility and two counts of aggravated indecent assault; and misdemeanor charges of strangulation and two counts of indecent assault.
