SRU projects in good shape
SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University’s summer construction and maintenance projects, which totaled nearly $2.5 million, are pretty much wrapped up.
“We’re in pretty good shape,” said Scott Albert, assistant vice president for facilities and planning.
SRU replaced underground steam lines between Swope Music Hall and the University Union, which included replacing pressure reducing stations and condensate pumps in Swope. The project cost about $660,000.
Albert said this was the first time in several years the work was completed before classes began.
“That’s a nice little bonus for us this year,” Albert said.
Work on a new entrance at Old Main’s west side, which includes an enclosed vestibule and wheelchair lift, continues. The $455,000 project will be completed in the fall. Albert said another project on Old Main will begin next month, with waterproofing on the east side and adding a new wheelchair ramp at a cost of about $265,000.
Work on a new, 60-seat math lab in Bailey Library at a cost of $500,000 is mostly done. Albert said SRU is waiting for a condenser unit. Until then, the lab has a temporary air conditioning setup.
SRU spent more than $200,000 on asphalt projects. This included maintenance and repairs on parts of Stadium Drive, the West Lake parking lot, Rock Pride Drive and the Robert M. Smith Student Center parking lot, as well as sealcoating at the Aebersold Recreation Center, Alumni House and East Lake parking lots.
SRU soon will begin waterproofing part of Maltby Hall’s foundation at a cost of $238,000.
In the spring, SRU will replace the roof on Maltby Hall. Albert said the roof shingles failed prematurely, so a warranty will cover most of the $100,000 it will take to replace them.
Additionally, SRU will add insulating panels underneath the shingles to make the building more energy efficient.
