Police: Man drives into house in Butler while fleeing police
A man drove his vehicle into a house in Butler late Monday night, Nov. 10, after state police said he fled from officers who asked for his identification while he was parked in a parking lot.
On Tuesday, police identified the man as Joseph Bailie and said he attempted to turn right onto Hansen Avenue during the chase around 11:50 p.m. Monday, but lost control due to his speed and crashed into house at 1015 New Castle St.
Bailie is being charged with fleeing police, reckless endangerment, driving under the influence and other traffic offenses.
Police said the man fled into the house, which was vacant, before being arrested.
The pursuit began at a Sheetz on New Castle Road in Butler Township. Police were called for a man who appeared unconscious in the driver’s seat of a silver Volkswagen Jetta while it was running with its headlights on.
Police said they knocked on the vehicle windows and requested the man’s identification multiple times before he began to flee. Police said Bailie first shifted his vehicle into drive and struck the concrete pole in front of him, then shifted into reverse and almost struck an officer while accelerating.
