Butler basketball’s Andrew Gettinger on commitment to Edinboro University: ‘I think I could succeed there’
Butler boys basketball’s Andrew Gettinger enters his senior season with one big decision off his plate: where to play in college.
The guard-forward verbally committed to Division II Edinboro two weeks ago, he said Wednesday at Butler Eagle Basketball Media Day. He announced the decision on social media Saturday.
“I went on a visit to their homecoming football game and it was a really good time,” Gettinger said Wednesday. “I liked it a lot. It felt like a family. ... I really liked (head coach Justin Jennings). He was a great guy and the assistants were all great guys, and it just felt like a good opportunity.”
I'm beyond grateful to announce my commitment to Edinboro University to continue my basketball and academic journey! Thank you to my family, Coach Clement, Coach Martinelli, @runtheshow and everyone who's supported me!

The 6-foot-6 wing, who played all over the court for a Golden Tornado squad that made the WPIAL Class 6A playoffs last season, said he also considered Slippery Rock, Gannon, Washington & Jefferson, La Roche and Franciscan (Ohio).
He called the process, which began when Franciscan attended Butler’s home game last year against North Hills, difficult. Edinboro began talking to Gettinger during the summer AAU season.
Gettinger likes that Jennings, in his third season in charge, is willing to play freshmen. He cited Thomas Jefferson grad Evan Berger, a guard who started 27 of 28 games last year and averaged 10.6 points a game in his first season, as an example.
“I think I could succeed there and just play my game,” Gettinger said.
The Fighting Scots went 15-13 last season and made the PSAC Tournament. They open the season Friday.
A Butler Eagle first-team all-star last season, Gettinger averaged 15.3 points, seven rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.6 blocks in leading the Tornado (16-7) to the WPIAL quarterfinals. He displays impressive ball-handling ability for his size and was used in playmaking roles regularly by Butler head coach Matt Clement.
