Butler County Symphony highlighting jazz this weekend
Immerse yourself in the brilliance of Duke Ellington’s orchestral works with the Butler County Symphony Orchestra this weekend.
The symphony will present “the playful textures of Shostakovich’s ‘Jazz Suite,’” where classical sophistication meets jazz. Milhaud’s “The Creation of the World” promises to mesmerize every listening ear with its blend of rhythm, harmony and melodies from France, according to the symphony orchestra.
The show is known as “A Jazz Odyssey,” and will be a concert that showcases the invention of jazz in the U.S. and its influence in other nations.
Moon Doh, music director of the symphony orchestra, said Ellington represents the U.S. perspective on jazz, while the other two artists featured, Shostakovich and Milhaud, are Russian and French, respectively.
“I wanted to share with the audience and musicians that jazz traveled very fast and landed in the Soviet Union,” Doh said. “I wanted to bring in the different cultures.”
The concert will be preceded by a lecture, hosted by accordionist Cody McSherry and Doh, who will provide some background for the music that will be performed at the concert.
The concert takes place at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 1, at Butler Intermediate High School, 551 Fairground Hill Road, Butler Township. For tickets or more information, visit butlersymphony.org.
