Miller Minutes: ‘Consider how you can make the holiday memorable for yourself’

Miller Minutes with Butler Eagle reporter, Molly Miller

Halloween in America is celebrated with the same level of enthusiasm as Christmas. As I’ve aged, the costumes seem more realistic, the decorations are bigger and stores start purchasing merchandise earlier each year.

What is it about Halloween that so excites us? Surely it can’t be the candy, which is available year-round. I don’t think it’s the thrill-seeking or spooky feelings either, since horror movies and roller coasters are readily available.

In my opinion, Halloween is just as popular as Christmas because it encourages play. When you dress up, walk the neighborhood and attend Halloween parties as a child, core memories are created.

Adults fling themselves full-force into this holiday because they’re trying to recreate those feelings of freedom they had as children. Fall always brings on a sort of nostalgia and reflection, so it follows that we find ourselves creating similar aesthetics and memories in our adulthood.

As you hand out Halloween candy this year, or attend a spooky party or event, consider how you can make the holiday memorable for yourself in years to come, and try to make someone else's day just as special.
