New flashing lights coming to East Locust Steet part of Butler Catholic safety efforts

Principal John Hazur said new school zone flashing lights going up on East Locust Street, between North Monroe and Cecelia streets, are part of Butler Catholic School’s efforts to keep student safety a top priority.

Butler City Council approved a motion Thursday, Oct. 23, to install new flashing lights in the school zone area for a 90-day trial, though Hazur said he expects them to stay up.

“It’s just a part of our ongoing efforts. We’re always looking for ways to increase safety around the campus and around the school,” Hazur said. “With all of the students, and there’s always one or two walkers around, we’re always trying to be mindful.”

Hazur said the new lights will be solar-powered, which he said will help with keeping maintenance minimal.

Hazur said the school appreciates its working relationship with the city on things, such as student safety.

“We really appreciate the partnership we have with the mayor and the city council. Everyone has supported student safety,” Hazur said. “We may do more work on line painting around the street too. Safety and security is a priority, and (we’re) putting our students first.”
