Summit Academy basketball starting over .. again
The more things change, the more they stay the same.
That seems to be the way it goes at Summit Academy as, with each new basketball season, an entire new team tries its luck.
Summit Academy doesn't have a single player returning from last year's team, so Knights coach Bill Styche will start from scratch.
His players haven't played organized basketball, but what they do have this year is size.
"We have no experience, but three are of decent height," said Styche, now in his seventh season at the helm of the Knights.
"With Dorian Stewart and Anthony Johnson, hopefully we'll work off that this year," Styche added.
Stewart is a 6-foot-5 junior forward and Johnson a 6-4 senior forward. They most likely will be teamed with 6-0 sophomore guard Anthony Posser, 5-10 senior guard Andre Berry and 5-8 junior guard Kasil Butler as the starting five.
Butler was a member of the football team this fall.
"Right now, it's still early, but our players have been looking for the big guys inside," said Styche. "The kids are working hard. Butler did play football, so he's been part of a team and the work that goes into it."
The Knights also have a pair of 6-2 senior forwards in Antonio Gales and Lyneil Ward and a pair of 6-1 junior forwards in John Miller and Maurice Holland. That makes seven of the Knights' 11 players 6-1 or taller."It's tough to gauge between Nos. 8 to 11, but we'll try and keep as many involved."It's more than just basketball. We'll try and teach them to play as a team. This, in my seven years, is the most kids I've had to start the season," Styche added. After spending last season in Class AAA with perennial powers like Blackhawk, Moon, Hopewell and Ellwood City, find themselves back in Class AA."Yeah, but we're back with Farrell and those guys," Styche noted. "It's still another good section."Last season, the Knights were overwhelmed in the section with an 0-14 mark and won just four of their 24 games. The team was led by Haadee Bennett's 14.5 points per game average and Robert Snowden added 12.5 points per contest.Styche doesn't know who will help carry the load, but he knows the effort will be there."It's a long process," said Styche. "You're teaching them the basics and they're trying to get it all at once."Our first scrimmage (was Monday against Leechburg). They're working hard. We'll just see what happens."
