Playoff payoffs on the line

After outscoring its past three opponents by a 166-12 margin, Freeport will wrap up the regular season at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Ford City, the last unbeaten Allegheny Conference team.

"We've made some changes and put some things in," said Freeport coach Bill Dillen. "We're more comfortable with it now."

While the Yellowjackets can't grab one of the three conference playoff berths, a win could go a long way in earning the one wild-card spot.

Three teams from each of the five sections will make the playoffs; a wild-card berth to fill out the 16-team bracket will be available.

"There are three or four teams that could get it," said Dillen. "If we win, we're 6-3."

The Sabers (7-1, 7-0) blanked Deer Lakes 39-0 last week while the Yellowjackets (5-3, 4-3) dispatched Union-New Castle 46-0 after defeating West Shamokin 59-12 and Deer Lakes 61-0 the previous two weeks.

"(Ford City) is a real good running team," said Dillen. "They hit the perimeter well and run some nice play-action passing. Hopefully we can slow them down."

Brian Zimmerman passed for touchdowns to Matt Caripolti, Nate Kotecki and Josh Schrecengost while Caripolti, Kirk Naedele and Brady Sherrieb ran for scores. Chris Ittner closed out the scoring with an interception return.

The Yellowjackets defense surrendered just 99 total yards.

Grove City (5-3, 4-1) at Greenville (5-3, 3-2), 7 p.m. Friday — The scenario is simple: Win and prepare for the playoffs. A loss, and the Eagles will place their fate in the hands of the D-10 committee. If Greenville loses, it can kiss its playoff hopes goodbye.Grove City has a good matchup. The Eagles' running game is clicking with junior Chris Clark (more than 900 yards rushing this season) and Dwayne Martin (more than 300 yards in the last two games).Greenville has coughed up 1,996 rushing yards this season. That's a clip of 249.5 per game. The Trojans have nearly abandoned their grind-it-out rushing offense in favor of a spread formation attack led by QB JoshChisholm, who has thrown for more than 1,000 yards this season.

A-C Valley (0-7, 0-6) at Keystone (4-4, 3-3), 7 p.m. Friday — The winless Falcons have two more chances to avoid a winless season, including next Friday at Reynolds.Keystone needs two more wins to complete the program's first winning season since going 6-3 in 2002.The Panthers have a balanced attack, starting with quarterback Ben Black, who has thrown for 817 yards and nine touchdowns. His top target is Mike Switzer with 22 catches for 420 yards and five scores. The passing game is complemented by running back Derek Swartfager, who has rushed for 644 yards and eight touchdowns.

Cornell (1-7, 0-7) at Summit Academy (3-5, 3-4), 12:30 p.m. Saturday — After jumping out to a 3-0 start this season, the Knights have dropped five straight contests but will try to close out their season with a victory against the Raiders.A win would give Summit Academy its first four-win season the program's history. The Raiders are coming off a 35-7 loss to the only other Tri-County North team without a win in Neshannock, who outrushed Cornell 315-48.Summit Academy lost to Mars 34-6 despite receiving 122 passing yards from Stephen Grandison, including a 3-yard touchdown pass to Leonard Brown with 25 seconds left to avoid a shutout.
