Mt. Lebanon senior runs over Seneca Valley

MT. LEBANON - After sitting out two games following a concussion, Mt. Lebanon's Mark Sutton was bound and determined to make his presence felt Friday night.

And did he ever.

The senior tailback scored four touchdowns in the Blue Devils' 48-20 thumping of Seneca Valley in Quad North conference play.

Sutton scored on runs of 16, 4 and 11 yards, and caught a 13-yard scoring pass.

"It's great to come out knowing I don't have to worry about my head anymore," said Sutton. "The line did a great job of opening holes. They made my job easy tonight."

Sutton might have scored the most points, but the Blue Devils' offense was anything but a one-man show.

Joe Rodella and Chip Young rushed for 86 and 81 yards, respectively, as Mt. Lebanon totaled 287 yards on the ground in 48 carries.

"With our defense, I just don't know," said Raiders coach Ron Butschle. "It's gone from what I anticipated: a strong and big run-stopping defense, to just a bunch of question marks."

Mt. Lebanon's effectiveness on the ground opened things up for quarterback Nick Till as well.

The senior completed seven of eight passes for 156 yards and two scores. He had just 150 yards passing and one touchdown entering the game.

"Nick needed this kind of performance because he's been struggling," said Blue Devils coach Chris Haering. "I think the last few weeks he was trying to do things that he wasn't capable of. Tonight, he stayed within himself and made some plays."

Seneca Valley's offense had a solid game, rushing for 215 yards and receiving some big plays downfield off the arm of senior quarterback Kevan Smith.

But, once again, the team's defense was unable to hold up its end.

After SV forced a Blue Devils' punt on the game's opening drive, Smith went up top and connected with wideout Kevin Mayberry on a 41-yard bomb that put Seneca Valley ahead, 6-0.

The extra point was no good, but, unlike in recent weeks, the Raiders' defense did have a lead to protect.

That didn't last long.

Mt. Lebanon answered with an eight-play, 65-yard drive that ended with Rodella's 4-yard scoring run.

Sutton tallied his first two scoring runs over the next 10 minutes of play, building his team's lead to 21-6 with 7:36 left in the half.

"We can't allow teams to chew up huge chunks of yardage and then expect our offense to score on every possession," said Butschle.

Smith and Pat Prazer hooked up on a 34-yard screen pass that went for a touchdown later in the second quarter. Lee Layton added a two-point conversion run and it appeared as though the Raiders would trail just 21-14 at the break.

But the Blue Devils' showed they have the capability to score quickly if needed. They drove 42 yards in just four plays, with Sutton's 13-yard scoring reception coming just four seconds before halftime, making the score 28-14.

"That one definitely hurt," said Butschle of the late score. "But we felt good about getting the ball first in the second half."

The Raiders were forced to punt on that first possession of the second half and the Blue Devils were on their way to making the game a rout.

Layton added Seneca Valley's final score, a 5-yard run, in the third quarter.

Prazer, who ended the game with 51 rushing yards on 13 carries, left the game in the third quarter with a leg injury.

SV's Dave Monteleone, who just joined the football team this week, handled the kicking duties while Ryan Scheller was the team's punter.

"For right now, that's how we're going to keep things," said Butschle. "We expect Dave to improve. This was only his first game."
