WEXFORD — Don Holl can live with long odds.

What the Seneca Valley football coach can't take is giving points away.

Friday night at North Allegheny, the Raiders trailed the unbeaten Tigers 20-3 at halftime.

Then in a 47-second span, NA scored 21 points and went on to a 47-10 rout in a Northern Seven Conference game at Newman Stadium.

NA's Matt Steinbeck scored on a 23-yard pass from Mike Buchert to make it 27-3 less than two minutes into the second half.

The Raiders muffed the ensuing kickoff and the Tigers recovered at SV's 17.

NA called Steinbeck's number again and the senior running back took the ball on a reverse and scored his second touchdown of the game.

Seneca Valley's offense stalled on its next drive and the snap on the punt went over the head of Aaron Tanda. NA's Alex DeCiantis recovered the ball for another Tigers score.

"We told the kids all week that North Allegheny is a very good team," said Holl. "It's going to be a heck of a challenge, but we can't give away points.

"In the first half, I thought we made them earn what they got," he added. "But then the start of the second half — you can't do those things against an average team, and we did it against a very good team."

It was the kind of start to the third quarter that NA coach Art Walker Jr. was hoping for.

Though his team held a three-score edge at intermission, Walker had to settle for two field goals in the first half, thanks to SV's defensive play in the red zone.

The Tigers (5-0, 3-0) also committed four penalties for 46 yards in the first two quarters.

A personal foul on the Tigers aided the Raiders' opening drive of the game, which resulted in Tanda's 28-yard field goal that gave SV a brief 3-0 lead.

"It was certainly more sloppy than we want it to be," said Walker. "At halftime, we talked about coming out to a fast start in the third quarter and we were able to do that.

"We definitely have to improve on some things, but we'll take the win," he added.

Following Tanda's field goal, the Tigers marched 65 yards in eight plays, culminating in Alex Papson's 3-yard scoring run.

Papson, who surpassed the 1,000-yard mark with 111 yards against SV, added a second short scoring run late in the first half.

Sandwiched between the senior's two scores were Alex Greenblatt's field goals of 28 and 23 yards.

SV sophomore quarterback Jordan Brown made his first varsity start and performed well.

Though he was not supported by any semblance of a running game — the Raiders (2-3, 0-2) rushed 29 times for nine yards — Brown still completed 20-of-34 passes for 256 yards and a touchdown and no interceptions.

Brown teamed up with Forrest Barnes on a 50-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter.
