Kane holds Moniteau football in check, especially run game, in Warriors’ home finale

CHERRY TWP — Kane spoiled Moniteau football’s senior night and home finale with a decisive 38-7 victory.

The Warriors (3-6) had chances to keep the game close in the first half, including a drive in the first quarter which included a 39-yard completion from Weston Cook to Liam Allison. However, on the very next play, Cook fumbled the ball away to the Wolves, who promptly took it 76 yards down the field to make the score 22-0. The drive ended on a 2-yard touchdown run by Preston Darr.

The Warriors did manage to make the game somewhat interesting in the second half. After a Kane fumble, they broke through for their only score of the game on the final play of the third quarter when Cook hit Brendin Sankey for a 35-yard touchdown.

Sankey and the run game were held to just 37 total yards, and Cook was forced to carry the offense through the air, going 7 of 21 for 143 yards.

“We adjusted a few things at halftime, told the kids to man up and start playing football,” Moniteau head coach Clay Kohlmeyer said. “They wanted to finish the season on a strong note, especially the seniors because it’s senior night.”

Leading the way for the Wolves was quarterback Eric Novosel, who completed 11 of 17 passes for 119 yards and two touchdowns and also ran for 111 yards on nine carries with a touchdown.

Kane established control of the game from its first offensive possession, as Novosel led the Wolves on a five-play, 52-yard march which ended with a 27-yard pass to Luke Johnson for the opening touchdown.

Midway through the fourth quarter, the Warriors were on the doorstep of a second touchdown, driving as far as the Kane 2-yard line before Cook threw an interception to Thomas Shrubb. After the scuffle that followed between the two teams, senior running back Levi Lacava was ejected from the game for unsportsmanlike conduct.

“I think it was just getting chippy out there, and they were trying to get control of the game,” Kohlmeyer said. “I don’t know why he got thrown out. It was his first penalty of the game.”

Despite the loss, Kohlmeyer can look back and see how far his team has come from their winless record last season.

“The kids realize what they have to do to win a game now,” Kohlmeyer said. “They have to go 100% every play. They can’t take plays off. We put in a new defense and a new offense this year, so all that’s starting to mesh and it looks good. Hopefully we can build on it and run more stuff next year.”
