High school sports roundup: North Catholic soccer claims WPIAL section title, Mars coach gets 300th win
North Catholic’s boys soccer team earned a WPIAL Section 1-2A crown with a commanding 12-1 win over Valley on Tuesday night.
Angelo Amelio and Arthur Mendonca both scored a pair of goals as the Trojans moved to 15-2-1 overall and 13-1 in section play.
Mars 2, Shaler 1 — Planets coach Chris Knauff scored his 300th career victory as his team earned second place in its section. Eli Stasiowski had a goal for Mars (11-5-2, 9-1-2 WPIAL Section 1-3A).
Freeport 5, Burrell 1 — Spencer Valasek and Ryan Sutara both had two goals for the Yellowjackets (10-7-1, 6-7-1 in WPIAL Section 1-2A) in their season finale.
Slippery Rock 3, Sharon 0 — Ryan Strother had two goals and Jesse Gahring another for the Rockets. Parker Wilhide had the shutout in goal.
Madison Romanovich and Adison Novad had seven kills apiece as Slippery Rock swept Mercer 3-0 by set scores of 25-8, 25-12 and 25-18.
The Rockets moved to 16-2 on the season.
Mars 3, Knoch 1 — Rylee Wooldridge had 25 kills and 14 digs, Cecilia Christy 16 kills and Gabi Weidemann 51 assists in the Planets’ win.
Mars faces Freeport with a chance to win WPIAL Section 2-3A outright. A Freeport win could create a three-way tie with Hampton.
North Allegheny 3, Butler 2 — Brynn Cornibe had 10 kills, surpassing 500 for her high school career, as the Golden Tornado lost by scores of 19-25, 19-25, 25-16, 25-23 and 11-15.
Ashlan Tosadori and Raina Lewandowski added 16 kills apiece while Julia Mason had 41 assists for Butler (9-8, 2-7 in section play), which finishes its season Thursday at Pine-Richland.
Seneca Valley 3, North Catholic 2 — The Raiders, needing likely two wins to make the WPIAL tournament, helped their playoff chances with this upset section win over the Trojanettes. No other details were provided.
Slippery Rock’s girls team moved to 4-1 as it took the first six finishing spots in a 15-48 win over Wilmington.
Freshmen Lydia Springirth (first, 21:01) and Lylah Robare (third, 21:10) and junior Kasey Yeager (second, 21:07) paced the Rockets.
Wilmington 26, Slippery Rock (boys) 29 — Senior Hunter Doerflinger (first, 18:57) and sophomore Zachary Geisner (second, 19:07) led the Rockets, who fell to 2-4.
