BUTLER TWP — The UPS hub at 129 Oneida Valley Road will relocate to Jackson’s Pointe Commerce Park in Jackson Township early in April and its neighbor, BHS East, may expand onto the vacant UPS property.

A 43,000-square-foot UPS warehouse, employing about 40 people, opened early this year at Jackson’s Pointe, which is near the intersection of Route 19 and Lindsay Road.

According to UPS spokesman Susan Rosenberg, the new facility is about 16,000 square feet larger than the Butler building and “positions UPS for improved transit times and later pickups to enhance service for the growing Cranberry area and northern suburbs.”

She also said UPS delivery drivers would have to drive fewer miles overall from the new hub, which is designed to accommodate more growth. It will have an automotive shop and a UPS Customer Center, and will take advantage of upgraded “sortation” technology that will help process smaller, lightweight packages from e-commerce and online shopping.

About 50 drivers are moving from the Butler building and some delivery routes will shift as well. Rosenberg said UPS expects to add about 15 new hires as a result of the move.

Rosenberg said UPS’ lease on its Oneida Valley Road building was expiring and the property owner wanted to convert it for a new use.

The property is owned by Butler Health System and its neighbor at 127 Oneida Valley Road is BHS East, which offers walk-in X-ray imaging, cardiology and laboratory testing.

Connie Downs, a BHS spokesman, said UPS was offered an extension on its contract to July of this year.

“At this time, we are looking at options for the best use of that space and have no definite plans,” she stated in an e-mail response to questions.

In the Pittsburgh area, UPS has more than 3,000 small package employees in eight buildings and dispatches more than 530 vehicles. The service also has about 130 additional employees in UPS Freight service centers in Meadowlands and Mount Pleasant.
