Chicora's Gaiser shoots his age, nets ace in same round
SLIPPERY ROCK — Many golfers have shot their age. Plenty of them have gotten a hole-in-one.
But achieving both during the same round?
Count Don Gaiser of Chicora among the few to do that.
Gaiser, 70, shot a 70 Oct. 28 at Oakview Golf Course. He also scored an ace on the 146-yard No. 16 hole with an 8-iron.
He accomplished the twin feat playing in the same foursome he's been a part of for a few years now, joining John Carpenter, Al Milanovich and Tom Sheehan.
"I've been playing golf for years and have never heard of anybody getting a hole-in-one in the same round he shot his age," Carpenter said.
Carpenter, 65, shot his age at Oakview in June.
Gaiser has shot his age before. He carded a 66 when he was 67 and scored a 69 last year.
He's had five holes-in-one during his lifetime.
"I think they've all come at Oakview, though I'm not sure," Gaiser said. "My last one was about five years ago."
His shot on No. 16 sailed directly toward the flag — and landed in the hole on the fly.
"We could hear the noise of it hitting the cup from where we teed off," Gaiser said. "I figured there was no way it was going to stay in there.
"First thing I did when I approached the green was check the sand traps. I was certain my ball would be in one of them."
It wasn't. It was in the hole.
"Don't ask me how it stuck in there," Gaiser said.
Now retired for 11 years, Gaiser plays golf five times a week. When not playing at Oakview, he golfs with his brother, Denny, at Krendale, Hiland, Lake Arthur and other Butler County courses.
Both have won club championships multiple times at St. Jude Golf Club. Denny Gaiser had a hole-in-one on No. 5 at Stoughton Acres earlier this year.
"Once I got older, St. Jude became a difficult course for me to play," Don Gaiser said. "Oakview suits my game a little more. I can still be competitive there and I like that."
Carpenter said Gaiser has shot his age "on numerous occasions" in recent years.
"He's always been a steady player," Carpenter said.
Gaiser didn't shoot his age until he turned 67, which was OK by him.
"You start wondering if you're ever going to do it," he said. "But Sam Snead shot his age when he was 66, so being just a year behind him isn't so bad."
Gaiser won the Butler County Tournament in 1963 at Armco and in 1964 at Saxon.
"I just love playing golf and I'm not going to get any better at it now," he said. "I go out and play as well as I can and see what happens."
