Knoch’s Norris true goal scorer

JEFFERSON TWP — The numbers speak for themselves.

Knoch junior Mindy Norris scored a school-record 58 goals this season for Knoch’s varsity girls lacrosse team after scoring 55 goals as a sophomore.

The Knights won only seven of 27 games during that stretch, including a 3-14 record this season.

Norris stood out enough to earn WPIAL Division 2 All-Star recognition, the first player to do so in the seven-year history of Knoch’s program.

“She has a lot of natural ability,” Knoch coach Garrett Butler said. “What I like about Mindy is she’s never been satisfied by that.

“She works on her game and comes back a better player each year. She really deserves this.”

WPIAL Division 2 consists of 18 teams. Only 11 players are chosen as division all-stars and the selections come from a vote of the coaches.

“I was astonished when I found out I got this,” Norris said. “It’s nice to get recognized for all of the hard work I’ve done.”

Knoch does not have a middle school lacrosse program, so Norris did not play the game until her freshman year.

“The best word I can use to describe our team is learning,” Norris said. “We’re still learning how to win. In volleyball, we expect to win.

“Teams we’re playing against in lacrosse are farther along in their development than we are.”

Norris plays the back row on the Knoch girls volleyball team, which has qualified for the WPIAL playoffs in each of her three seasons.

“Just about every other team in our section has a middle school program,” Butler said. “That’s definitely left us with a disadvantage.”

Knoch has never had a winning season.

Still, the Knights have been competitive of late. They lost three games this year by one goal, two others by a pair of goals.

And they have Norris scoring loads of goals. Her 116 varsity tallies — including three her freshman year — are a school record.

“When I’m heading toward the net, adrenalin just takes over,” Norris said. “I want to score. I don’t want to miss.

“No one’s going to be perfect ... Still, I don’t want to miss.”

Besides her 58 goals this year, Norris tallied four assists, 56 draw controls, 26 ground balls, three forced turnovers and two interceptions.

Mandi Boldy, also a junior, was second on Knoch’s goal-scoring list this season with 28.

“Mindy has a gift for the game,” Butler said. “She was able to pick up the basic skills — passing, catching, cradling — rather quickly.”

Norris has hopes of playing lacrosse in college. Only two other Knoch players — Paige Macadeag (Gannon) and Chelsea Yursic (Indiana, Pa.) — have ever done so.

“She can definitely play this game at the next level,” Butler said.

“She works hard to win the ball. It’s like any other sport, whether it’s football, basketball, baseball ... when you need a goal, get the ball in her hands. Mindy will find a way to make it happen.”
