Dragons find their batting stroke at the BlueSox's expense

In the midst of a 10-game road trip with a five-game losing streak, the Dupage (Ill.) Dragons were in dire need of some really big hits.

They found them in Butler Wednesday night.

Trailing 3-2, Dupage tallied four runs in the sixth inning and nine over the final four to take an 11-4 Prospect League victory from the BlueSox at Pullman Park.

"We finally got a hit," said Dupage manager Travis Walden. "On Tuesday (against Butler), we had a couple of situations where we could not get the hit.

"You know how it is: When you're not winning, nothing seems to go your way," Walden added.

Butler (10-13) can empathize because it had problems of its own Wednesday.

The BlueSox committed five errors and stranded 12 runners, including nine in scoring position.

"We couldn't get the big hit," said Butler manager Jason Wuerfel. "Baseball's not just about hitting, but timely hitting.

"That's a credit to their pitching staff. ... You're not going to get a lot of good pitches with runners in scoring position. We missed on the pitches they gave us and they didn't," he added.

Dupage took the lead for good when it opened the sixth inning with Jack DeAno reaching on an error.

He stole second on a strikeout by Jomel Torres, then a walk to Jake Miller and a high-chop single by Jared Deacon loaded the bases.

Seth Batty drew a walk to bring home one run that chased BlueSox starter Tim Giel.

James Conley came in to relieve Giel and struck out Derek Brown on a 3-2 pitch. However, the Dragons' Trey Martin lined an 0-2 pitch for a two-run single to make it a 5-3 Dupage advantage.

A pickoff attempt on Martin allowed another run to cross before Martin was tagged out to end the inning.

"Overall, we struggled defensively," said Wuerfel. "When you make as many miscues as we did, your pitcher goes 20 pitches deeper than he has to."

After Dupage scored two runs in the first inning, the BlueSox answered with two runs in the home half of the first when Zach Duggan opened with an opposite-field double. Austin Wulf walked and Kevan Smith tallied a two-run single.

Butler loaded the bases in the ninth inning and Logan Uxa earned an RBI with a walk, but Adam Jury grounded into a double play to end the game.

That was typical of the BlueSox Wednesday as they stranded a runner at third, a runner at second, and at second and third in the first three innings.

"That's the way it's been," said Wuerfel. "Sometimes you eat the bear. Sometimes, the bear eats you. We gotten eaten tonight."

Notes: Butler stole three bases and was caught twice while the Dragons had two steals and were caught on the base paths three times.
