High school sports roundup: NC’s Stall, Marche make WPIAL doubles tennis final; Camryn Woods leads Freeport to win

North Catholic’s tandem of Macaria Stall and Evelyn Marche will compete for a district championship in girls tennis Thursday when they meet Winchester Thurston’s Veronica Zinski and Marann Buckanovich for the WPIAL Class 2A doubles crown at North Allegheny High School.

The teams are seeded second and first in the tournament, respectively.

On Wednesday, Stall and Marche defeated teams from Oakland Catholic, Quaker Valley and Neshannock on their road to the title match.

Another duo from North, Anna Ravotti and Ava Conley, won a first-round match against Mount Pleasant before falling to Zinski and Buckanovich in the quarterfinals.

Boys golf

A-C Valley/Union’s Joe Rapp will carry a two-stroke lead into the final round of the District 9 Class 2A individual championship Saturday at Punxsutawney Country Club.

In Monday’s first round at the same venue, Rapp carded a 1-over 73. Cranberry’s Dalton Wenner is second with a 75, Elk County Catholic’s Jacob Wasko third with 77.

Karns City’s Joey O’Donnell enters the final round tied for 10th with an 81. Moniteau’s Isaac Book is tied for 12th after shooting an 82.

Girls soccer

Camryn Woods scored once and assisted on a goal from teammate Nia DiSanti in Freeport’s 2-0 shutout of North Catholic.

Alyssa Alcorn earned the clean sheet for the Yellowjackets (12-1, 8-0), who have won 11 straight.

North Catholic fell to 9-4 overall and 5-3 in section play.

Mars 1, Fox Chapel 1 — Miley Gratton scored for the Planets (9-3-1, 5-2-1) off an assist from Katie Blake.

It was the first Section 1-3A game not won by the Foxes this season.

Butler 3, North Hills 0 — Cecelia Wolford, Malina McElroy and Lucia Leyland each scored a goal for the Tornado (6-6-1, 1-5-1).

Lucia Leyland added two assists.

Cross country

Moniteau’s Alexis Kirschner crossed the finish line first in a girls dual-meet against Karns City, finishing in 22:54. The Warriors won 15-45, as KC does not have a full team. But the Gremlins’ Megan Hartle (24:12) and Sophia Bonetto (24:13) finished second and third.

In the boys’ half of the meet, which Moniteau also won 15-45 by default, the Warriors’ Baylen Rock won in 19:14. Peyton Beck finished second in 19:28. Karns City’s Logan Rumbaugh was fifth in 23:25.
