High school sports roundup: North claims top 2 spots in WPIAL section doubles tourney
North Catholic girls tennis coach Dorothy Dohanics said she was relaxed while watching the WPIAL Section 3-2A doubles championship match Thursday at Oxford Athletic Club in Wexford.
On either side of the net were two familiar faces.
North’s duos of Evelyn Marche/Macaria Stall and Anna Ravotti/Ava Conley were facing each other for the crown. Marche and Stall earned a 6-3, 6-2 victory.
“First, I couldn’t have been more proud of both of our teams for fighting their way through the bracket to get to that point,” Dohanics said. “It shows the talent and depth we have in our program.
“Before the final match started, I told the girls ‘Go out there and have some fun.’”
The tournament began Wednesday at Hampton Community Park. Semifinal matches were suspended due to inclement weather and action resumed Thursday at Oxford.
Marche and Stall, both sophomores, dispatched Indiana’s Sophiana Sidikou and Lila Dubefsky in three sets, while Ravotti and Conley did the same with Hampton’s Ariana Barbera and McKenna Restori to reach the title match.
Both North Catholic tandems will compete in the WPIAL tournament next week.
