College sports roundup: SRU football remains No. 4 in D2 poll; BC3 volleyball sweeps again
Slippery Rock University football remained locked at No. 4 in Monday’s NCAA Division II coaches poll.
It was a stable week in the rankings, released by the American Football Coaches Association, as the top 18 remained unchanged from a week ago.
SRU also announced Monday it has agreed to a home-and-home series against Minnesota Duluth. They will play their openers against each other in 2026 and 2027, with The Rock hosting the meeting next year.
The Bulldogs have twice won the NCAA championship, in 2008 and ’10.
Slippery Rock volleyball’s Lauren VonderHaar was named the PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Week after the senior middle blocker recorded 32 blocks, 32 kills and five aces in four games at the D’Youville Tournament.
SRU football’s Kayne Thompson was named the PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Week after he recorded eight tackles (one for loss), two forced fumbles and a pass breakup in Saturday’s 42-0 win over Shippensburg.
Thompson’s teammate, Joe White, earned special teams AOTW after his 73-yard punt return Saturday, SRU’s first since 2021. The junior receiver also caught three passes for 40 yards.
Butler County Community College is now 12-0 after yet another sweep. The Pioneers, who recently moved up in the NJCAA Division III rankings to No. 6, beat the Community College of Beaver County 25-10, 25-16, 25-16 Tuesday night as Josie Russo had 12 kills and three aces. It’s her sixth straight match with double-digit kills.
Longtime coach Rob Snyder is within 10 wins of 500 with nine regular-season matches left before the postseason.
Westminster freshman Brody Pirt, a Seneca Valley grad, shot a two-round 151 to finish tied for 15th at the Guy and Jeanne Kuhn Memorial Invitational on Monday. Westminster finished eighth.
