Daniels, line lift Raiders to win

VANDERGRIFT — Many running backs credit their offensive line after a big game.

But James Daniels went one step further.

When asked to comment after scoring his seventh touchdown in three games in Seneca Valley's 26-14 win over Kiski Area Friday night, Daniels wouldn't say a word until he had summoned all of his blockers to share the attention.

There was fullback Joe Pichette, tight ends Shawn Eagle and Nick Marzock and offensive linemen Ian Whittaker, Gary Flavion, Alex Hart, Stew Myers and Don Barclay — the same teammates who helped Daniels amass 203 yards on 41 carries against the Cavaliers.

"This guy is a horse," Barclay said of Daniels.

The junior tailback has earned the praise, toting the ball 106 times for 417 yards in the first three games.

"It means a lot," Daniels said of his latest performance. "But I couldn't have done it without the offensive line."

His 13-yard scoring run with 9:46 left in Friday's game extended SV's lead to 24-14.

Seneca Valley's defense then slammed the door on the Cavaliers, forcing quarterback Josh Vick to fumble into his own end zone late in the game.

A Kiski Area lineman recovered the ball inside the goal line for an SV safety with 2:27 remaining.

Marzock recovered the onside kick the Cavaliers attempted on the ensuing free kick.

From there, Daniels and company easily ran out the clock.

"The offensive line did a nice job," said Raiders coach Ron Butschle. "There were a few plays where our guys really dominated up front."

"We expected that they would run the ball as much as they did," said Kiski Area coach Chris Heater. "They got a good push up front, and when that happens, you can get five, six and seven yards at a time."

Unlike the Raiders, who got over two-thirds of their offensive yards on the ground, the Cavaliers went to the air to move the ball.

Vick completed 12 of 25 passes for 246 yards.

His 75-yard touchdown pass to Don Mignogna put Kiski up 7-3 in the first quarter.

Then, with his team trailing 10-7 late in the third quarter, Vick pump faked to free up Mignogna down the left sideline.

The senior wideout was fully extended when he pulled the ball in at Seneca Valley's 1-yard line for a 40-yard gain.

Senior tailback Jonathan Tague plowed into the end zone on the next play to give the Cavaliers a 14-10 edge.

The Raiders faced a fourth-and-5 from their own 47-yard line on the next drive.

Ryan Scheller lined up as if he was going to punt, but the ball ended up in the hands of the up-man Shaine Patsilevas on a direct snap.

The result was a 13-yard gain and a new set of downs for the Raiders.

The drive ended early in the fourth quarter when SV quarterback Ted Pynos called his own number on a 1-yard run.

The air was taken out of Kiski's sail on the ensuing kickoff.

Mignogna fielded the kick and headed to his left, looking to set up a reverse with Tague.

But Tague never controlled the ball, as it bounced off his shoulder pads and onto the ground before SV's Jeff Scanlon recovered at Kiski's 13-yard line.

Daniels scored his second touchdown on the very next play.

Getting a turnover is one thing, but turning it into points is something SV teams of the recent past have failed to do.

"We talked about finishing games at halftime," said Butschle. "That's how you grow up as a team."

With the win, Seneca Valley improves to 2-1 overall. It's the first time a Raiders team has had a winning record after three games since 2002.

"This year's seniors have never been 2-1," said Butschle. "Tonight was just one win, but it's pretty big for us."

Notes: Scheller opened the scoring with a 23-yard field goal mid-way through the first quarter ... Daniels' first score of the game was a 10-yard run that put the Raiders up 10-7 with 2:20 left in the first half ... Pynos completed five of 14 passes for 108 yards ... Mignogna ended the night with six receptions for 161 yards for the Cavaliers.
