High school sports roundup: Freeport, North Catholic, Seneca Valley golfers advance to WPIAL final

Freeport boys golf advanced four golfers from the first round of the WPIAL Class 2A championship, held at Hill Crest Country Club in Lower Burrell.

Ethan Crooks and Max Zigo both fired an 83 to move on, and teammates Carson Kane (84) and Aiden Bauman (85) also made the cut.

Four North Catholic golfers are moving on — Christopher Faber (78), Eric Proie (81), Ben Kandravy (86) and Collin Glass (86).

The field has been cut from 91 to 43 golfers. They will compete in the final round of the WPIAL 2A championship, scheduled Sept. 30 at Valley Brook Country Club in McMurray.

WPIAL Class 3A — Seneca Valley’s Anthony Cardosi and Josh Marquardt both moved on from the first round at Willowbrook Country Club near Apollo by carding a 76.

Butler, Mars and Knoch golfers missed the cut.

The final round is set for Sept. 29 at Butler Country Club.

KSAC Championship — At Punxsutawney Country Club, A-C Valley/Union finished runner-up in the team standings with 468 strokes and Moniteau was third with 469.

Keystone won the title with 442.

The Falcon Knights received a 73 from Joe Rapp, good for second place individually, and Koen Strauser placed seventh with an 85.

Joey O'Donnell of Karns City tied for third with an 83. Moniteau’s Brennan Kelly tied for eighth with 86.

Keystone’s Sean Karg won the conference crown with a 70.

Girls volleyball

Slippery Rock rolled over visiting Oil City via sweep Monday.

Lexi Caldwell had 23 assists while Ashley Ragan contributed seven kills, while Adi Novad and Madison Romanovich had six kills apiece.

The Rockets dominated the Oilers by scores of 25-4, 25-14, 25-17.

Brookville 3, Moniteau 1 — Lily Staab and Sayge Brunst both dropped 10 kills and Maddy Eury tallied 25 assists, but the Warriors fell by scores of 22-25, 29-27, 12-25, 23-25.

A-C Valley 3, Punxsutawney 0 — The Falcons downed the Chucks by set scores of 25-16, 25-19, 25-20.

Maddy Dehart tallied eight kills, Malia Page seven kills, Nichole Wingard 23 assists and Sarah Bashline 10 digs in the victory.

Union 3, Tidioute Charter 1 — Brooke Hileman had a double-double with 14 kills and 11 digs, as the Damsels won by set schools of 25-14, 23-25, 25-10, 25-14.

Adrianna Kriebel had 17 assists, eight digs, three aces and a kill; Lilly Hayden had 42 digs, four aces and a kill; and Haley Corle recorded nine kills, three digs, two aces and a block.
