PHILADELPHIA — A federal judge agreed Tuesday to delay the corruption trial of powerful state Sen. Vincent Fumo to give a new defense lawyer time to prepare.
Fumo's trial is now set for Sept. 8, more than 18 months after the Philadelphia Democrat was indicted.
Lawyer Dennis Cogan, who worked as a city prosecutor in the early 1970s, will defend Fumo on the 139 fraud, corruption and related counts.
Fumo is charged with defrauding the state Senate, a seaport museum and a nonprofit by using their staff and assets for his personal and political needs.
Fumo recently dropped longtime adviser Richard Sprague from the case after more than three years of work by Sprague's firm because Sprague & Sprague also represented the alleged victims at relevant times.
The trial had been set to start in February, but Cogan said he cannot give his full attention to the case until May. Prosecutors argued that Fumo should have found a lawyer who could be ready for trial by May.
U.S. District Judge William Yohn Jr. concluded that Fumo had tried in good faith to find available counsel.
Fumo, 64, has held his Senate seat since 1978. He remains in office but has stepped down from his leadership posts. He faces a challenger in the spring primary.
