Event celebrates aviation

Fly In/Drive In set for Sept. 28 in GC

GROVE CITY — Bob Schawalder said the 17th annual Fly In/Drive In at Grove City Airport is a "boys and your toys" event, giving flyers a chance to show off their airplanes.

Schawalder, president of chapter 161 of the Experimental Aircraft Association, said the Sept. 28 event will all depend on the weather. There are 30 members in the chapter.

"What we do is promote the airport and sport aviation to local people," Schawalder said. "A lot of the planes are custom built, homemade, military or production aircraft, and you never know what's going to show up from this year to the next."

The Fly In/Drive in will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and include breakfast and lunch.

In addition to a large display of airplanes, activities will include a car cruise, a helicopter display and a display from the U.S. Army.

Author Jane Birch will discuss her book, "They Flew Proud," which is about her father in the training program during World War II.

A sky diving display is scheduled for noon with a flag jump.

Schawalder said about 800 people attended the Fly In/Drive In last year.

"We have it pretty well down pat and have a tremendous group of people," Schawalder said. "We have worked together so long that it's like walking and chewing gum — we spend a lot of time on it, but the weather has a lot to do with it."
