Miller Minutes: ‘The leaves are changing’

The doors of haunted houses and corn mazes are creaking open for the season. And I’m terrified.

Personally, I’m not much of a thrill-seeker. It doesn’t make sense to me to pay for a scare. Life is scary enough. That aside, I have grown to appreciate horror movies over the past year, which means I may be venturing out of my comfort zone and onto the scary hayride.

Fall has always been about Halloween for me, but it also signals a sweep of nostalgia. The year is nearly over, the leaves are changing, and you find yourself thinking of where you were last time they turned.

Musical artist John Mayer puts it this way: “When autumn comes, it doesn’t ask. It just walks in where it left you last.” Whether those feelings are creepy or cozy, they are there, and it’s more fun if you lean into them.

Since I’m leaning into my spooky era, I’ve visited Spirit Halloween, watched scary movies such as “Until Dawn” and “Drop,” and started listening to “sweater weather” music (think Simon and Garfunkel and Hozier).

I’ve also been waiting for fall events to kick off. This weekend is the perfect one to get out and see what Butler has been brewing. Check out the schedule below, or, if you feel so inclined, just stay in and watch a scary movie.
