Program aims to inform

Later this month, Parents in Toto is hosting a presentation at its Autism Resource Center in Zelienople.

The presentation is aimed at helping community organizations and service providers better understand how to build an inclusive environment for people with autism. Organizers hope that participants will be able to walk away with tools and a better understanding of autism to spread inclusivity through the region.

Megan Shane, the nonprofit's outreach manager, said they hope to bring in organizations that aren't autism orientated, but that reach people with autism. In many cases, she said, those groups see the needs, but don't easily come by the educational backgrounds or tools to lend a helping hand.

“Schools are integrating students with autism now,” Shane said. “This is the way autism support is moving. Schools are integrating, communities should be too.”

The presentation is from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Jan. 28 at the center, located at 142 S. Main Street in Zelienople. Those interested should call 724-473-0990 or email info@parentsintoto.org to RSVP by Jan. 20.
