High school sports roundup: Slippery Rock, Mars volleyball win in sweeps; Butler XC wins tri-meet at new course

Slippery Rock girls volleyball made quick work of visiting Greenville on Tuesday, sweeping the Trojans by scores of 25-14, 25-18 and 25-14.

Adi Novad, Madison Romanovich and Kasey Yeager each had five kills in the win, Lyla Runtas had five aces and Lexi Caldwell 15 assists. Yeager was fresh off a second-place finish in a cross country dual-meet against Grove City earlier in the evening.

Mars 3, Valley 0 — The Vikings offered little resistance in this sweep by scores of 25-15, 25-13 and 25-13.

Cecilia Christy had eight kills for Mars, Kate Southwell seven kills and Gabi Weidemann 22 assists.

North Catholic 3, Butler 0 — The Trojanettes prevailed by scores of 25-19, 25-22 and 25-17.

Butler fell to 5-3 overall and 1-2 in section play. No statistics were provided.

Clarion 3, Moniteau 0 — Emily Matz, Lily Staab and Sayge Brunst combined for 15 kills in this 25-13, 25-16 and 25-18 loss for the Warriors.

Pine-Richland 3, Seneca Valley 0 — No other details were available from this loss for the Raiders.

Karns City 3, Union 0 — The Gremlins got by the Damsels by scores of 25-20, 25-19 and 25-19.

KC (4-4, 2-3) received 10 kills and four aces from Naomi Venesky, and 15 assists from Jessica Rodgers.

Riley Kriebel dished out 13 assists for the Damsels.

Boys golf

North Catholic’s Ben Kandravy earned the WPIAL Section 9-2A championship by carding a 70 Monday at Rolling Acres Golf Course near Beaver Falls.

Kandravy is one of five Trojans to advance to the first round of WPIALs, scheduled next week. The others are Christopher Faber (73), Dylan Murray (76), Eric Proie (81) and Collin Glass (83).

Freeport 185, St. Joseph 256 — The Yellowjackets (15-1, 11-1) clinched their fourth straight WPIAL Section 1-2A championship with another great performance at Buffalo Golf Course.

Ethan Crooks’ 34 included a chip-in for eagle. Aiden Bauman (36), Max Zigo (37), Gavin Tola (38) and Jackson Kane (40) all had strong rounds for Freeport.

Mars 187, Pine-Richland 188 — The Planets edged the Rams at Pheasant Ridge Golf Club.

Jack Weaver led the way with a 34, Jaxon Hittle and Jackson Geiger both fired a 37, Lukas Singh a 38 and Matt Mueller a 41.

For Pine-Richland, Mike Peiffer and Sam Schenk shot 36.

Seneca Valley 175, Knoch 197 — Marcos Lopez carded a 4-under 32 for the Raiders at Saxon Golf Course.

Bradley Steiner and Josh Marquardt came in with a 34, CJ Gworek had a 37 and Vinci Villella a 38.

For Knoch, Jake Jones (37), Colt Sprankle (38) and Aaron Voltz (38) each finished in the 30s.

Cross country

Butler’s boys and girls improved to 5-0 with wins over Mars and North Hills in a tri-meet at the Golden Tornado’s new home course, Preston Park.

In the girls team results, Butler beat Mars 20-43 and North Hills 24-33, and North Hills beat Mars 20-42. Butler’s boys beat the Planets 15-48 and the Indians 15-46, and North Hills beat Mars 26-29.

The Golden Tornado took the top five spots in the boys race, with Logan Rogers pacing the field with a time of 17:26.20. Alex Motonis finished second in a pack of Tornado in 17:40.70; Landon Slear, Brendan Eicher and Ethan Thomas all finished within 4 seconds of Motonis. Mars’ Colton Rearick was sixth in 17:50.40.

The Planets’ Hailey Long won the girls race in 18:48.70, well ahead of second-place Zari Golojuh (Butler), who ran a 19:17.0 for second. The Tornado’s Macie McLister finished third in 19:26.10.

Seneca Valley boys 16, Shaler 47; Seneca Valley girls 15, Shaler 50 — R. McGee ran an 18:32 to lead the Raiders to a dual-meet win at Shaler. I. Wall came in second in 18:52, and H. Peterson’s 19-flat rounded out the top three.

SV’s girls won an uncontested dual, as Shaler did not have enough runners. E. Cilik finished first in 23:30, and Paige D’Amico finished second in 24:04.

Grove City boys 15, Slippery Rock 48; Grove City girls 28 (tiebreaker), Slippery Rock 28 — The Eagles narrowly beat the Rockets’ girls on a rare tiebreaker with the best sixth runner.

Kasey Yeager came in second in 21:11.20 for Slippery Rock girls (1-1), with Lydia Springirth third in 21:38.30. On the boys’ side, Hunter Dorflinger led SRHS boys (0-2) with a sixth-place finish in 18:42.20.

The overall girls’ winner was Josie Jones (20:51.10) and boys winner was Logan Leskanic (18:33.30).

Boys soccer

Frank Knezovich had one goal and one assist to lead Mars to a 3-2 win over Knoch.

Hickory 4, Slippery Rock 3 — Goals from Ryan Strother, Wade Freehling and Logan Berry were not enough in the Rockets’ loss to the Hornets.

Zach Lasko and Alex Cagle both had an assist for the Rockets.

Fox Chapel 2, Butler 1 — Julian McCall scored the Golden Tornado’s goal off an assist from Jude Perhacs.
