Butler County's great daily newspaper

State's COVID-19 ZIP statistics open to interpretation

We can’t take credit for the state finally releasing COVID-19 information by ZIP code, but we have been one of the concerned parties making that request of the Department of Health for several weeks.

But since we are part of the invisible portion of Pennsylvania, our request probably only was fulfilled because someone in Philadelphia or a neighboring county of Philadelphia asked for the same thing.

It is very interesting to read the Facebook reactions that many had to that release. The saddest reaction was from Butler County residents who couldn’t recognize Butler County on the state map.

Several readers tried to help the geography-challenged ones but struggled to clear it up very well. Some people found 161 cases over a month’s time to be alarming, while just as many others saw it as proof in their eyes that nothing is wrong, and Butler has more to fear from the loss of high school sports than from a pandemic. Forty-three cases in the 16001 ZIP code is either the hot spot of the pandemic or a certain sign that it is time to reopen the bars and casinos.

Some folks are still not satisfied with this new layer of public disclosure. They want to see more specific information; maybe where the people that tested positive bought their last supply of toilet paper and was it two-ply or four-ply.

One person wants his information broken down by township and his eggs over easy. Another resident from Sarver did an in-depth analysis of the 16056 ZIP code and came out to 99 residents have been tested and 12 cases positive.

Is that good or bad?

One resident interpreted those numbers as a definite sign it is too early to reopen Pennsylvania, and the next person asked if they saw 43 people in 16001 testing positive as a reason to panic.

Seems no one can agree on what these numbers mean.

Another Facebook genius says the positives are over-stated because he thinks people in car accidents are tested after they die and get included if their body tests positive.

But coroners across the state are complaining they aren’t able to even get the tests to run on recently expired persons because of the shortage of tests available.

Somebody’s imagination is working overtime. A more reasonable person pleads the case that only a vaccine will be the true solution.

The comment section isn’t without the normal people playing the blame game.

One gentleman is certain the MEDIA are at fault. We are never sure when to take that personally. Do the attacks on the media and the blame include local reporters, or is that just Fox and CNN?

So now we have more detailed information, and it seems to only have divided and confused us more.

Have Facebook comments ever changed your mind about anything? Do you take anything you see there seriously?

It is an entertainment forum. What little news they really have has been taken from other news sites — large and small newspapers mostly — and then spun whichever way they see fit. No one holds them to any journalistic or moral standard.

We should be glad the state has made this attempt to be more transparent. If it helps you decide to stay home more, that is fine. If it makes you feel more at ease venturing out of the house, then good for you.

Please keep the welfare of others in mind just as you would if you had the flu or poison ivy. No reason to infect others or put them at risk.

And please, keep your Facebook truths to a minimum.
