Maintenance man charged
EVANS CITY — A maintenance worker at an upscale condominium complex in Adams Township will face trial on charges he stole more than $14,000 in property from one of the resident’s homes.
Christopher Relihan, 30, of Adams Township on Tuesday waived his right to a preliminary hearing before District Judge Wayne Seibel in Evans City.
Relihan faces several felony and other charges in the case.
Adams Township police suspect the alleged crime at Adams Pointe this year was an inside job.
Pittsburgh surgeon Robert Kang, who moved into his condo in August, contacted police last month after noticing several items missing from the home, police said.
Among the suspected stolen property was his father’s wedding ring and college ring, a Rolex watch, pearl earrings and a diamond ring, according to court documents.
Kang told investigators that after he moved in, the condo’s maintenance crew had been in his home to do repair work.
Police got the names of all the maintenance workers and checked that list with Butler County pawn sheets to see if there were any matches.
Detective Michael Bailey said he learned that Relihan on Oct. 25 sold a class ring to the Treasure Hunt store in Cranberry Township.
From a photograph, Kang identified the piece of jewelry as his father’s college ring, documents said.
Police on Nov. 5 took Relihan in for questioning.
During a search, Bailey said officers found Relihan with two unopened Suboxone patches. Relihan acknowledged he did not have a prescription for the drug that is frequently used to treat opiate addiction.
A preliminary search of his car turned up numerous empty stamp bags of suspected heroin.
At his home, investigators found “hundreds” of empty heroin bags as well as marijuana and other drug contraband, a police affidavit noted.
Bailey said officers also seized keys for apartments in the condo complex.
At his police interview, Relihan admitted to twice entering Kang’s home in the last several months but denied taking any items.
“He said that he needed to enter these units to access the main water lines,” according to the affidavit.
“He said that he found (Kang’s) ring behind the maintenance building.”
Following the interview, police charged Relihan with burglary, trespass, theft and receiving stolen property, all felonies.
Additionally, he is charged with possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia, both misdemeanors.
Relihan, who is free on $5,000 unsecured bail, could not be reached for comment following Tuesday’s court proceedings.
His formal arraignment in Butler County Court will be Jan. 21.
