Knights come through again

Knoch's Lizz King pushes past Burrell's Morgan Sharick Monday. The Knights grabbed a 64-47 victory.
4th-quarter frenzy lifts Knoch to win

LOWER BURRELL — With his team nursing a two-point lead after three quarters in Monday's game at Burrell, Knoch girls basketball coach Curt Vasas wasn't too concerned.

He figured the best was yet to come.

The Knights scored the first nine points of the fourth quarter and outscored the Bucs 23-6 en route to a 64-47 Section 1-AAA victory.

"It seems you can go back to each game, and, in one quarter, we just go gangbusters," said Vasas. "I don't know why. It just clicks.

"I'm to a point now that if we have a bad quarter, I don't worry," Vasas added.

Knoch (15-4, 9-2) led 41-39 entering the final frame before reeling off nine consecutive points — highlighted by a pair of Sarah Cooper layups — for a 50-39 lead with 2:47 remaining.

Burrell's Nikki Becker, who scored a team-high 16 points off the bench, buried her fourth 3-pointer of the game to make it an eight-point game.

After the teams exchanged baskets, Knoch went on another 9-0 run, this time capped by perfect 6-for-6 shooting at the free throw line (four by Pam Gagen, two by Abby Marshall) for a 61-44 lead with 37.1 seconds left.

Gray led the Knights with 17 points while Gagen had 14 of her 16 points in the second half. Cooper added nine points and Lizz King added eight points.

"This is the type of team that doesn't have a go-to player," said Vasas. "On any night, someone steps up. We don't have to worry about one person in foul trouble.

"Haley Hutterer, Kristen Gagen and Sara Montgomery gave us quality minutes. It's nice to go to the bench, especially this time of year," Vasas added.

Knoch had jumped out to an early 10-2 lead, but a couple of 3-pointers by Becker helped inch the Bucs closer.

The second and third quarter saw eight lead changes and the third quarter had four ties.

Knoch continually tried to work the ball inside with mixed success, but it never strayed from the idea.

"At the beginning of the year, we didn't use the post much, and that's my fault," said Vasas. "Through the season, I'm trying to put them in good position, and they're doing a nice job.

"There have been nights we've had nine 3-pointers. Again, it's choosing the hot hand. We're very unselfish. Even in the turnovers, we're looking in the right spot,"Vasas added.

The road win was big as it keep the Knights in section title race behind Mars (10-1) and ahead of Indiana (8-3).
