Mary McCarthy
Mary Louise Lesney McCarthy, 86, of Butler, passed away Saturday, Sept. 13, 2025, at Butler Memorial Hospital.
She was born Sept. 4, 1939, in her family’s farmhouse on the family farm in Butler. Mary was one of nine children of the late Martin Lesney and Mary Chopic Lesney.
She was a loving mother and homemaker.
Mary was a devoted and faithful member of Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church. She truly loved her church and her church family.
She was an outstanding baker (her pies were amazing!) and she also enjoyed cultivating flowers. Mary’s extended family will miss the exceptional and delicious fruit bowl that she prepared each year for their Holy Night dinner at the family homestead.
A true sports fan, she enjoyed watching games on television and found particular pleasure cheering for all the Pittsburgh teams. She was also proud to report that she had never missed voting in either a primary or a general election.
Mary is survived by four children, John McCarthy, of Butler, Monica A. Merinchuk and her husband, Eric, of Smithville, Ontario, Canada, Alan T. McCarthy and his wife, Maria, of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, and Bonita McCarthy, of Sundre, Alberta, Canada; and two grandchildren, Raymond McCarthy and Victoria McCarthy.
She is also survived by eight siblings, Irene Divers and her husband, Carl, of Butler, Antoinette Kennedy and her husband, Wayne, of Mars, John Lesney, of Butler, Barbara Lesney, of Mount Chestnut, Amil Lesney, of Mount Chestnut, M. Carl Lesney, of Mount Chestnut, Eugene Lesney, of Mount Chestnut, and Stephen Lesney and his wife, Paula, of Mount Chestnut; and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Keith T. McCarthy, who passed away Dec. 17, 2021; and one son, Todd Thomas McCarthy, who sadly passed away Sept. 12, 2025 — less than 24 hours before Mary left us.
