Miscues cost SRU in 20-13 loss at West Chester

The statistic line looked good. The scoring line didn’t.

Mistakes plagued the Slippery Rock University football team all day in a 20-13 loss Saturday at West Chester.

“Statistics don’t win football games,” SRU coach George Mihalik said. “We certainly proved that. We out-statted them in almost every area.

“At the same time, we played pretty badly today.”

Cody Endres threw for 242 yards for The Rock — becoming the first SRU quarterback to produce consecutive 240-yard aerial efforts since Jeff Valentino in 2002 — but was intercepted three times and sacked on four occasions.

SRU (2-1) took 11 penalties for 102 yards and had a 46-yard field goal attempt and PAT blocked.

West Chester (1-2) got field goals of 22 and 36 yards from Shawn Leo and a 49-yard punt return for a score by Jackson Fagan. The latter score occurred with 1:44 left before halftime and gave the Golden Rams a 17-6 lead.

The Rock nearly answered, but receiver John Schademan was tackled inches from the goal line after making a 6-yard reception as time ran out.

“We had an 11-point swing on special teams in the first half,” Mihalik said. “We have a field goal and PAT blocked, they return a punt for a touchdown.

“We usually win the battle of special teams on Saturday. Today, we didn’t.”

West Chester’s other score came on its first offensive play. Sean McCartney connected with Rondell White for a 65-yard touchdown pass, moments after The Rock assumed a 6-0 lead.

Neither team ran the ball effectively. The Rock netted 53 yards on the ground and went to Jimmy Zubik in the second half. Akeem Satterfield managed only 42 yards on 17 carries, but did score SRU’s first touchdown.

“Akeem wasn’t hurt. We just felt we needed a change of pace in the backfield,” Mihalik said. “West Chester did a nice job of bottling up Akeem.

“We were looking for a spark from Jimmy and he gave us one.”

Zubik caught a 12-yard TD pass from Endres early in the fourth quarter, but The Rock could not pull even.

Devin Goda had a career-high 11 catches for 103 yards Saturday. Defensive end Jeff Thompson paced The Rock defensively with nine tackles, three for loss, and one QB sack. Linebacker Quindell Dean had a career-high eight tackles.

The Rock returns home Saturday for its Hall of Fame Day game against Indiana (Pa.) at 7 p.m.
