Cranberry Township man has 12 charges added in alleged child sexual abuse
CRANBERRY TWP — A township man accused of recording juvenile sexual acts had 12 additional charges added to his Butler County case in a Friday, Sept. 12, preliminary hearing.
Cameron J. Villanti’s request to lower his $500,000 bail was denied by District Judge Kevin Flaherty after assistant district attorney David Beichner added charges and disclosed Villanti has a pending case in Erie County with similar charges.
Beichner added felony child rape, three felony counts each of filming child sex acts and indecent assault of a person less than 13, two felony counts each of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, and three misdemeanor counts of indecent exposure to Villanti’s charges.
He was initially charged with one felony count each of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, filming child sex acts, indecent assault of a person less than 13, corruption of minors, and misdemeanor indecent exposure.
Villanti, represented by public defender Joseph Smith, waived his right to a preliminary hearing.
Villanti is accused of filming sex acts by a 10-year-old child and sending a clip of the video to the child on a smartwatch. Police said he also communicated explicitly with the child and planned future sex acts.
Cranberry Township police said they learned of the accusations Aug. 20 from a report by Erie city police. The act reportedly occurred during the about five months Villanti was living in Butler County.
In Erie County, Villanti was charged with one felony count each of disseminating explicit sexual material of a minor and unlawful contact with a minor, and misdemeanor corruption of minors. Erie County assistant district attorney Shawn Kaliszewski is prosecuting the case.
Erie city police said they seized a Gizmo smartwatch from a woman after she found the video of the child. Police said Villanti sometimes babysat the child.
Police viewed the footage and identified the child by her outfit. Police said they found the outfit at a woman’s home after she had not worn it since the incident.
Police said Villanti also asked the child for inappropriate photos and sent the video to the child from his cellphone to the smartwatch. Erie city police are charging Villanti in sending the video, according to the affidavit.
Villanti was in Erie County Prison before he was extradited to Butler County.
Villanti’s formal arraignment is scheduled for 1 p.m. Oct. 28 in Butler County Common Pleas Court. He remains in Butler County Prison on $500,000 bail.
In Erie County, his preliminary hearing is scheduled for 1 p.m. Oct. 23 before District Judge Timothy Beveridge.
