The 2025 PIAA football season is nearing the midway point, which means the start of section and region games across Butler County.
The area continues to experience winning football in the early going. The race to be the last unbeaten team stands at a hefty five: Butler, Freeport, Mars, North Catholic and Union/A-C Valley.

9:22 p.m.: Aliquippa ices it with pick-six against Mars
Colin Yurisinec was hoping to lead a game-tying drive with less than 20 seconds left, but his first pass of the drive was picked off by Quips DB Qa’lil Goode at midfield and returned for a touchdown.
After a timeout, the PAT is blocked again to make it 19-6.
According to the broadcast, Aliquippa attempted just three passes in the second half.
9:18 p.m.: Work does work as Aliquippa takes lead over Mars
JJ Work made a hard cut and dove up the gut from a little more than 9 yards out for his second TD in the final minutes, putting Aliquippa up 12-6 with about 23.4 seconds to play.
Mars had won the past two games with a last-second blocked field goal and a less-than-a-minute touchdown and ensuing interception. But it looks like the Quips are going to turn the tables on the Planets (3-0) with a late score.
PAT is good this time.
9:16 p.m.: Mars defense has to make stand in red zone
JJ Work burst through the line to get Aliquippa inside the 15. The Quips then went incompletion and short run by Work to get inside the 10. There are less than 30 seconds left.
9:12 p.m.: Aliquippa threatening to win it on final drive
The Quips are inside Mars territory after a huge catch and run on a third-and-8 pass, which came after they were flagged for a false start. Mars’ defense had held most of the game, but gave up a score on the last drive as the Quips went run-heavy.
9:02 p.m.: Karns City thumps Moniteau, Union/A-C Valley extends lead
The Gremlins improved to 3-1 with a 56-7 romp at Moniteau, extending their win streak in the rivalry series.
In other District 9 action, RB Max Gallagher took a shotgun handful to the right, made a cut inside and broke a tackle to score from inside the 10-yard line. The Falcon Knights (3-0) are now up on Cameron County 29-6 early in the fourth.
8:56 p.m.: Grove City take first lead in tight games, Aliquippa ties it up
Slippery Rock trails 21-20 early in the third quarter on Gavin Purdy’s 7-yard run, which was set up by an interception by Grove City’s defense.
And in WPIAL action, the Quips are finally on the board and tied with Mars 6-6 in the fourth quarter on a short run. Like the Planets’ PAT, Aliquippa’s was also blocked.
The Planets have won consecutive games in the final seconds. Will this week be a third?
8:54 p.m.: Butler gets on the board, misses 2PC
Deacon Simko finally gets Butler on the board, but the Tornado trail 26-6 in the third quarter.
Update: Simko’s score came on a 79-yard kick return.
8:49 p.m.: Grove City staying close
The Eagles’ Jaxyn Wilson broke free for an 83-yard touchdown run to cut into Slippery Rock’s lead, making it 20-14 in the third quarter.
8:23 p.m.: Owen Long carrying Slippery Rock in first half
Owen Long has had a breakout game so far for the Rockets, who are up 20-7 at halftime. The back has two of SRHS’s touchdowns and has carried the ball nine times for 103 yards.
8:15 p.m.: Butler trailing at half against Hollidaysburg
I believe this is the first time this season the Tornado (3-0) have trailed at halftime. Hollidaysburg is up 19-0 and has held Butler to 28 rushing yards; and Butler has committed five holding penalties.
7:57 p.m.: Karns City pouring it on against rival Moniteau
QB Cole Johnston just broke a couple tackles and ran in another touchdown to put the Gremlins up 42-0 just before halftime. There will be a running clock in the second half.
North Catholic also went up 35-0 with a few minutes left before halftime to trip the running clock after the break.
7:48 p.m.: Mars strikes before halftime on bomb to Hein
The Planets are up with less than 40 seconds left before halftime after QB Colin Yurisinec connected with WR Game Hein on a big pass play to make it 6-0 (PAT blocked).
7:37 p.m.: Butler trails after first quarter
Hollidaysburg is up 7-0 on the unbeaten Golden Tornado and has possession after an interception. This is the first time Butler has been 3-0 since 2002.
7:31 p.m.: Jump ball touchdown? Jump ball touchdown, North Catholic
Not much is more fun than watching a jump ball go for a touchdown. North Catholic just went up 21-0 seconds into the second quarter over Quaker Valley when QB Joe Felitsky chucked it up in the air for his receiver, and he snagged it just passed the goal line. (Also quite the timing when clicking over to the livestream.)
7:17 p.m.: Slippery Rock extends lead, Norwin up early on Seneca Valley
And just like that, the Rockets are ahead 14-0. Following a Grove City turnover, Doug Popovec took a QB keeper 5 yards into the end zone. Four full minutes have yet to elapse.
And in WPIAL Class 6A action, Norwin is up on Seneca Valley after a 12-yard TD pass with 7:37 left in the first quarter.
7:13 p.m.: Slippery Rock takes early lead over Grove City
It did not take long for Slippery Rock to get on the board in its rivalry game against Grove City. Owen Long dashed in from 4 yards out to cap a 77-yard drive, giving the Rockets a 7-0 lead early, per reporter Derek Pyda.
