State police apprehend sexual assault suspect
SLIPPERYROCK TWP, Lawrence County — State troopers Monday afternoon nabbed a Butler County man wanted for allegedly molesting a girl, following a traffic stop in the township.
Douglas James Wetzel Jr., 24, of Clearfield Township was arrested without incident about 4:40 p.m. near a motel on New Butler Road, state police said.
Police last week obtained an arrest warrant for Wetzel on charges he sexually assaulted a 13-year-old girl at his Old Route 422 house on Aug. 14.
The girl told investigators the defendant inappropriately touched her. She said he also kissed her neck and rubbed her shoulders.
District Judge Sue Haggerty arraigned Wetzel on misdemeanor charges of corruption of minors and indecent assault. Apreliminary hearing is scheduled Sept. 16 at the office of District Judge Lewis Stoughton in Chicora.
Wetzel, who is divorced and the father of a 3-year-old child, is in the Butler County Prison on $25,000 bond.
He also is held on a detainer by the Pennsylvania Board of Parole.
According to court records, Wetzel violated the conditions of his parole in connection with a 2007 conviction for burglary in the county, and for a pair of 2005 convictions for burglary in Mercer County.
Wetzel, meanwhile, faces unrelated charges from a domestic dispute in Butler on June 29, when he deliberately rammed his vehicle into a vehicle driven by Kasey Snyder of Butler, according to city police.
Wetzel is charged in that case with simple assault, reckless endangerment and criminal mischief. A preliminary hearing is set Sept. 22.
