Man faces sex crimes

He's accused in 2 county sex assaults

A suspected serial rapist accused of numerous sexual assaults across the state will be moved today to Western Pennsylvania to face two cases in Butler County and two others in Allegheny County.

Cranberry Township police could charge Wilbur Brown II, of Swatara Township, Dauphin County, as early as today in connection with two sexual assaults last year.

District Judge Kelley Streib on Wednesday is to arraign Brown on charges in both cases.

But first, District Judge William Wagner of McCandless was to arraign Brown this afternoon on charges he assaulted a woman outside a Marshall Township, Allegheny County, fitness center in 2004.

Brown later this evening was to be arraigned in Allegheny County in the attempted sexual assault of a woman in Sewickley.

A construction worker, Brown last week in Dauphin County waived his right to a preliminary hearing stemming from five assaults he allegedly committed in the middle part of the state.

A month earlier, he waived to court still other rape and sexual assault charges filed in Lancaster, Cumberland and Jefferson counties.

Police and prosecutors throughout the commonwealth say Brown raped or assaulted at least 10 women since 2002.

He is being held in Dauphin County Jail on more than $500,000 bond.

Officers for the Pine-Marshall-Bradford Woods Police Department in Allegheny County traveled to the Harrisburg area this morning to take custody of Brown, who will be moved back to this area to face charges.

He will remain in the Allegheny County Jail while awaiting court proceedings here, authorities said.

Butler County District Attorney Tim McCune, noting Brown still must get an attorney here, did not know when preliminary hearings would be in the two Cranberry cases.

McCune earlier this year assisted in a multi-county task force that spent several months investigating the series of related attacks on either side of the state.

Authorities said Brown targeted women as his work took him to construction sites across Pennsylvania. He avoided detection, in part, because he would not remain at those sites for extended periods.

DNA evidence ultimately linked the suspect to the crime spree, McCune said.

Brown was arrested Aug. 24 in Jefferson County, moments after he bound and assaulted a convenience store clerk. The woman managed to trip the store alarm as she fought back.

"(Brown) preyed on victims of opportunity, choosing women who were alone and in secluded areas," McCune said.

In Butler County, Brown on July 14, 2004, allegedly robbed, tied up and assaulted at gunpoint a 19-year-old woman as she worked at a Route 19 convenience store/gas station in Cranberry Township.

Three months later on Oct. 13, he is accused of robbing and sexually assaulting at gunpoint a 25-year-old woman who was leaving work about 10:30 p.m. near the Landmark North Office Building on Route 19 in Cranberry.

Between the two Cranberry assaults, Brown allegedly attacked a 30-year-old woman outside the MAC Fitness Center in Marshall Township.

The woman said she was approached by the suspect, carrying a handgun, about 9:30 p.m. He forced her into his car and demanded she expose herself, said Chief Bob Amann of the Pine-Marshall-Bradford Woods Police Department.

The attacker later punched her and hit her with the gun.

Police last month charged Brown in the case. He is charged with aggravated assault, robbery, unlawful restraint, simple assault and terroristic threats.

Brown in the most recent case in Western Pennsylvania is accused of trying to sexually assault a 41-year-old woman walking near a Sewickley intersection in Allegheny County on April 29.

He is charged in that case with attempted sexual assault, simple assault and terrorist threats.

Meanwhile, Brown already faces court for sexually assaulting two women along the Conewago Recreation Trail — a popular hiking trail in Lancaster Township — in 2002 and 2003.

He has confessed to both assaults, according to state police.

Brown also faces trial in Dauphin County for these cases.

The Nov. 29, 2004, alleged rape of a woman in the Wildwood Lake Sanctuary in Harrisburg.

The Jan. 4 robbery and assault of a woman at a Susquehanna Township business.

The Jan. 30 sexual assault of a woman on a nature trail in Londonderry Township.

The Feb. 3 sexual assaults of two women at a video rental store where both victims worked in West Hanover Township.

The May 27 sexual assault of a woman at a veterinary hospital in Fairview Township.
