Yellowjacket defense stinging
Freeport High School football coach Bill Dillen liked what he saw in practice leading up to last week's non-conference tilt against McGuffey.
"We pretty much had a good week of practice and that translated into the game," said Dillen.
The Yellowjackets posted a 17-0 victory over the Highlanders, the second consecutive year they shut out McGuffey.
Quarterback Bryan Zimmerman had a 38-yard touchdown pass to Josh Schrecengost and Kevin Turner added a 4-yard run to account for Freeport's two touchdowns. Mike Ziedler had two extra points and a 40-yard field goal.
That gives Freeport (1-1) something to build on heading into the Allegheny Conference opener at Ford City at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
The Sabers (1-1) are fresh off a 23-13 victory over Waynesburg. Nathan Bush took the opening kickoff 86 yards for one touchdown and scored on a 3-yard run to close out the game and seal the Ford City win.
Mark Szymanski led the ground game with 86 yards and another score.
"They are a very good football team," said Dillen. "Their quarterback, Jesse Stivason, is excellent and they are well-coached (by (John Bartolovic).
"We'll try and keep the ball away from (Bush). There's the expression that we don't want to put the ball in the rhino's hands."
Grove City at Greenville, 7:30 p.m.
- The Eagles are coming off a hard-fought 17-5 win over Harbor Creek in which they were out-gained, but gave up just a 45-yard field goal. The offense gave up a safety.
Grove City senior Jesse Alfreno, in his first game at quarterback, completed just one pass for 31 yards, but he didn't throw an interception and avoided the Harbor Creek rush to turn potential negative plays into positive ones.
Grove City also found another running back in sophomore Chris Clark, who rushed for 119 yards on 20 carries.
Greenville is coming off a shocking 21-6 loss to Seneca in which its ground game was stymied to the tune of just 59 yards.
The Eagles haven't fared well against the Trojans over the past nine seasons, winning just once. The series, though, is close with Greenville holding a slim 46-45-6 edge.
Union at Redbank Valley, 7 p.m.
- The Golden Knights had a disappointing opener, falling to Cambridge Springs 33-0. It was the sixth time in its last 11 games that Union was shut out by an opponent.
Redbank Valley is coming off a 26-8 win over Keystone.
Clarion-Limestone at A-C Valley, 7:30 p.m. -
The Falcons would like to get last week's game out of their minds as soon as possible.
A-C Valley was out-gained 417-85 in dropping a 71-0 decision to KSAC-power Clarion. The team will try to regroup against a Clarion-Limestone team that survived an 8-7 affair at Moniteau in its opener.
The Falcons' defense surrendered seven scoring runs a week ago, but Clarion-Limestone managed just 40 rushing yards on 30 carries, belying its one-point win.
Summit Academy (1-1) at Mohawk (1-1), 7:30 p.m. Friday -
The Knights are coming off an 18-15 victory over New Brighton last Saturday, their first win since a 28-16 win over Neshannock in October of 2003.
Quarterback Earl Zarpele tossed a pair of touchdowns and rushed for another, finishing with 163 yards on 9-of-16 passing.
Mohawk, which lost a thrilling 48-47 double-overtime decision to Beaver Falls, was led by quarterback Josh Crum, who threw for 123 yards and a touchdown and also ran for two other scores. Jesse D'Amico rushed for 127 yards and one touchdown.
