SRU claims PSAC soccer crown
The Slippery Rock University men’s soccer team claimed its seventh Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference title with a 3-2 double overtime win over Mercyhurst University Saturday.
Stephen Donnelly scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner with 5:16 remaining in the second overtime, and was named tournament MVP.
It’s the first PSAC title for No. 24-ranked SRU since 2009.
The win almost certainly earned The Rock a spot in the NCAA tournament.
Last season, Mercyhurst edged The Rock in the PSAC title game, 1-0.
Dom Francis also scored for SRU.
Men’s BasketballMaurice Lewis-Briggs scored 20 points and added six rebounds as the Slippery Rock University men’s basketball team held off a Shepherd University rally for a 76-68 win Sunday afternoon at the Clarion Hotel Conference Classic tournament.The Rock (1-1) fell to Charleston 73-68 in overtime Saturday.Tabari Perry added 12 points, seven rebounds and four assists for SRU in Sunday’s win.The Rock led 43-23 at the half and 48-23 early in the second half, but Shepherd came storming back, cutting the lead to five with 42 seconds remaining.The Rock will play its home opener at 7 p.m. Thursday against Ohio Valley University at Morrow Field House.
Women’s BasketballAlexis Brown scored 15 points to lead three players in double digits, but the Slippery Rock University women’s basketball team fell to Ursuline College 86-65 in the season opener Saturday night.Jazmyne Frost and Aidan Geise each added 12 points for The Rock.Ursuline jumped out to a 22-8 lead and never trailed. SRU had 17 turnovers.The Rock will open its home schedule against Wheeling Jesuit at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Morrow Field House.
