Crash leaves 1 dead

Wife, children escape injury

JEFFERSON TWP - Alcohol was a factor in a one-car crash on Alwine Road early Wednesday morning that killed a Butler County man, state police said.

Allen Young, 34, of Penn Township was killed when his wife, Melissa Lee Young, lost control of their 1997 Chevy Venture at 2:35 a.m.

Police said the vehicle hit an embankment on the side of Alwine Road, traveled across the road and struck an embankment on the other side. The vehicle then flipped over before coming to a rest on its wheels.

Police said Young was either thrown or crawled from the vehicle and was on the side of the road. Melissa Young then drove the vehicle back to 375 Reimer Road to get help for her husband.

Melissa Young, who did not suffer any injuries, later submitted to an intoxilyzer test. Police declined to disclose her blood-alcohol results.

Sgt. Dale Mitchell, patrol section supervisor at the Butler barracks, said this morning that Melissa Young has not been arrested but that the investigation continues.

Eric Butler, assistant commander for Saxonburg Ambulance, said Alwine Road was salted but in good condition.

Butler said Allen Young, a member of the Saxonburg Volunteer Fire Company, was lying on the side of the road when the ambulance arrived and was semi-conscious.

Police said Young was flown by medical helicopter to Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh where he was pronounced dead at 5:25 a.m. A cause of death was not immediately available, according to the Allegheny County Coroner's office.

The Youngs' three children, Dylan, 6, Dalton, 3, and Desiree, 6 months, were secured in their child safety seats and were not injured.

According to state police, neither Melissa nor Allen Young were wearing their seatbelts.

Allen Young was a service technician at Bryan's Heating & Air Conditioning, and he also drove horse and carriage for Doreen Blackburn Horse and Buggy.

The Fox Funeral Home in Saxonburg is handling his funeral arrangements.
